Thats not new here. In Caledon Ontario about 10 years ago many home owners lost the homes they paid for their entire life because Natives put a claim on them. The owners had to move and were not compensated. Most had their homes paid off when they were forced out.
I live in Northern Ontario, Manitoulin Island on Lake Huron. When we bought our house it cost a lot of money to have a lawyer investigate. They went back hundreds of years and there are no claims on our land. So we are safe but unfortunately most people in Canada do not realize they have to do this when buying a house.
If you dont then you could one day lose that house you paid for without any compensation at all.
My husband has a sister in Victoria BC who is going through that now. Their house is worth 3 million dollars and its all paid. They just retired thinking they had it made but now it looks like they may lose everything they own.
It has likely also happened in the US you just may not know it yet. Much of your land belonged to natives before it was stolen and they can get it back if they decide to fight for it.
I would followThe Little House on the Prairie model and blow my house up right in front of whoever is trying to claim it. Sure... the land is yours, but my house is not.
We have title insurance for that reason, can't close on a house without it if it's being purchased with a mortgage. Do you have title insurance in Canada? Now, who knows what is in the fine print of that insurance but doubtful that would fly in America.
I saw a report that broke down the fact that in all the land (this was for Canada and the U.S. ) that out of 18,000? pieces of land that has either been seized or is targeted, that only 1 has belonged to a democrat. Let that sink in.
