Snap isn't as bad as the rest of what the dens want. I have a relative in his 60s, has been recovering from a stroke and also has an immune condition that is not curable...he gets $100 in snap a month. Maybe some people abuse it but celebrating its end is kind of cruel
President Trump wants to fund SNAP for citizens, especially those who really need it, like your relative. I believe most of the Republicans, and a few Democrats may be ready to vote for this. President Trump however, has also said it's not for those who are able but unwilling to work, or for those who are undocumented immigrants who are getting benefits in blue states so they can register them as voters.
This is what Press secretary Karoline Leavitt had to say about the matter:
I made a post about the British 'Poor Laws' a while back and they did a better job than we currently do in classifying the needy into categories. There's categories for people who are injured and can't work (should get benefits), then for those who could work but are unwilling (indigent - no benefits), former criminals who have trouble getting work because of their past record (no benefits), people who are temporarily down on their luck (get a certain length of benefits)... basically we have lost the ability to categorize people into 'deserving' versus 'undeserving' and it has scrambled the whole conversation
Every single person on SNAP thinks they deserve it.
And then we make excuses for those that are personally important to us, or who remind us of ourselves.
Trying to sit down and triage who "really" deserves it is a fools errand of trying to establish moral binary factors.
It gets a bit messy when someone points out that people with illnesses and injuries can still get work. Old people can still work. It's actually good for them. Go look up the statistics on how fast a senior citizens health starts to fall as soon as they retire.
I have multiple chronic health issues due to some pretty rotten genetics and was literally bedridden (legit only got out of bed to go to the bathroom and when I needed to shower for my endless round of doctors) for four years.
I didn't go on SNAP. I built my own company. My brain still works and most of it was built with a shitty smart phone and 8 year old laptop.
No reason why others in the same system can't do the same.
People that are "temporarily down own their luck "? What is a reasonable cut off date for when "temporary" becomes too long? 3 months? 6 months? A year?
There are plenty of jobs out there if anyone needs them. Hell, shit tons of migrant farm work, janitorial stuff, housekeeping, dishwashers, laundry workers, landscaping, etc... Any job that has traditionally been held by illegal immigrants should have plenty of job openings. Look at all the business owners boohooing that their businesses are being affected by the deportations. Call them up and apply.
This is one reason why the country is in the mess its in. Even conservatives feel like they're entitled to public assistance because they're old, or they're sick, or they live in a place with no jobs, or its only "temporary". They justify it with "Well I paid taxes, so this is really me just getting my money back." and then point fingers at every other benefits recipient.
So once you're able to figure out some algorithm that can neatly sort people into who is morally deserving and who isn't, let me know.
Yeah I kind of agree with you, but also I just gave you the outline of a system that at least would be better than what we've got. I'm all for scrapping the program - but the fact that we don't even sort people into 'deserving' vs 'undeserving' means that when these programs do exist, they get taken advantage of to the max. At least let us call a bum a bum, and a person who has suffered misfortune a worthy recipient. As they say, "Being broke is a temporary condition. Being Poor is a state of mind"
Sure we sort them into "deserving" and "undeserving". You just don't agree with the parameters. Everyone doesn't get it. There are actual guidelines on who can get it, how much they get, and for how long.
You just don't agree with those guidelines. 🤷♀️
True - though we conservatives have been letting the liberals control those things and not paying attention to them, it's no wonder they've moved the goalposts so far to the point they're no longer meaningful. Time to pay attention I guess
Here's also something to think about. Unless you actually know someone's personal story, you can't determine if they're "deserving" or not for assistance.
That person who is a "bum"? How do you know they don't have some horrible chronic illness?
You can't just look at someone and determine if they're "deserving" or not. There's a lot of prejudice against certain people on assistance (and we all know who they are). So anytime someone sees one of "them" using SNAP then they're automatically judged.
This happened once at a grocery store I worked at in college that gave me a different perspective on the matter:
A young black woman, couldn't have been more than very early 20s had three kids, from one year old to about 5 or 6. Yeah, I leapt to conclusions. Comes through and pays with food stamps (this was a long time ago in MS when they still used actual pieces of paper for food stamps). Yeah, I leapt to more conclusions. There were some issues with her check out because she was trying to buy some name brand canned veggies when the coupons she had would only pay for store brand. So I told her she had to put them back and go get the generic versions. And I wasn't shy about using a really judgemental tone of voice. Not my finest hour.
She starts crying and apologizing and telling me she didn't know. It was the first time she had ever used them. See...her oldest sister had died a couple months previously. Along with her husband. Bad car accident. Those kids were her niece and nephews. And she was the only one they had that could take care of them. Her parents lived all the way across the country and were preparing to move back to MS so they could help out.
This girl was taking care of her dead sisters kid. Had dropped out of college for the semester so they wouldn't be put into foster care and so they wouldn't have to be uprooted from everything they knew to be shipped across the country to their grandparents.
I got the entire story because I felt like absolute dogshit after making her cry and took her and the kids for an ice cream to apologize. This isn't a Lifetime Made for TV movie special, so I'm not going to tell you that we became the best of friends, but I would speak with her whenever she came into the store and met her parents when they moved back down. Nice people. Her dad was a mechanic for BMW helping design motorcycles. Her mom was a nurse. I think she finally got her degree in elementary education, but I'm not sure. I lost touch after I quit working there.
So, yeah, after that, I realized you don't really know what people are going through just by looking at them. People are really compassionate once they hear the particular reason why someone is on assistance. It happens here all the time. People will be talking shit about people on SNAP and an anon will come in and say that they're on SNAP or a loved one is on SNAP and then everyone in the chat will fall all over themselves reassuring them that they are different, they actually deserve it, they aren't abusing the system, knowing virtually nothing about the person. But because they're here, then they can't be one of "those people" who abuse the system, right?
It's just hypocritical bullshit. That's all it is.
Here's another important issue. All this shit about how people take advantage of the system so it needs extra scrutiny. EVERY single thing that the government touches has people taking advantage of it.
One of the absolutely biggest government expenses with astronomical levels of abuse? The military. You will not believe how much fucking theft and fraud and abuse is in the military, yet very few people suggest we get rid of it. Yeah, stop spending money on other countries, plenty of people will agree with that, but for fucks sake, our only neighbors are Mexico and Canada, not exactly hostile governments (illegal migrants isn't a hostile government) and we constantly increase our military spending.
The US spends something like the same amount that the next SEVEN best funded military countries spends. That's including China and Russia. It's fucking retarded. And it's not all because we're "policing the world".
It's mostly because of lobbyists from the military industrial complex persuading the powers that be to keep buying shit from them that is fucking ridiculous.
You want to get really angry? Go look at how much money we're sinking into the F35-A. That's just ONE FUCKING PLANE. A fucking obsolete piece of shit that's not ready for action even half of the time because it's plagued by so many bugs and yet we keep buying them. That one stupid plane wastes as much money each year as ~30% of SNAP's entire budget each year. And that's just one example of the fraud and waste of the military. Just one plane. ONE.FUCKING.PLANE.
This is a classic case of people in power telling you to look over there 👉. Don't look over here 👈 where all of the politicians good buddies work. No, the real bad guys aren't the beltway bandits and Lockheed Martin douchenozzles. It's the poor people on food stamps stealing your hard earned money. Not the fucking billionaires.
I'll step down off my soapbox now. I'm sure someone else needs it.
Proud of you, I have big disability myself that is affecting my bones heart and other functionality but not like yours so I am working. Plus Snap is not enough to live nowadays, it is a government handout, don’t like it. In other countries, the governments don’t have that so what do they do? Work, period.
It's not just illegal immigrants. It's all the green card holders, the "Permanent residents" who Obama and Biden let in, who have absolutely no intention of working. THEY are sucking up a ton of SNAP and Medicaid benefits.
True, that - One more reason to deport them all...
No shutting down cash SNAP is NOT cruel. Give people FOOD.
Cash SNAP? They're not handing out cash in California. We get credit towards food and that's it. The food is astronomical expensive in California. 48 ounces of orange juice: $3.98. 96 ounces of milk: $6.68. 16 ounces of honey: $4.56.
Corporations are making tons of money to make us poorer and make themselves richer. I hate what they did to us with the plandemic
No state has out cash SNAP. They have been getting credit cards for years.
Cash is a separate program that is also paid on a card.
so true, went to visit relatives in southern Calif., gas ranging from $4.29 to $5.29, a kefir yogurt drink 32 fluid ounces like $9.99 at some grocery stores, should be more like $4.99, maybe $5.69, but $9.99 got me to walk out of the store without buying any
Correct, but not for all. I don’t agreed with free things. I have been repeating this many times, in other countries don’t have Snap or health insurance for people who don’t work or have disabilities, why do you think illegals w/or without disabilities come here? Not because they want to work.
AMEN! Cut off all SNAP and MEDICAID and they will self deport!
Eventually if these illegals stay here, they have to pay for what they used one way or another. Everybody think all is free, no sir you have to pay it.
??
Some people sell their snap benefits (vouchers or however they use it), so some people who receive snap don't even use it for food. I saw a guy say that as an example, if they get let's say $4,000 in snap, the people sell it for like $1,000. So, those people obviously don't need it for food purchases. They are playing the system to make money. Some people have their whole families on these type of benefits or disability, when many have nothing wrong with them that they can't work, even young people.
yeah there's too much scamming going on it's time to restructure it all - to disrupt these scam operations at the very minimum
SNAP used to be charity given by the church, and relatives helping out relatives. Not forced charity given by the government with our money. If you have this relative, give them $100 a month. Why make us pay for it? I love heartbreaking stories of people who need it, but why doesn't the family, friends, community, church stand up? I know SNAP is useful, but so were all these other avenues. People could give what they wanted, when they could, and what they could afford. Not trying to be disparaging to your relative, but we gotta get back to taking care of our own.
Personally the only reason I'd like the lockdowns to end is flight disruptions. I just wish there was another way to end SNAP benefits and starve the parasites.
Yes, stop SNAP, and give actual hungry people actual FOOD!
Berkshire Hathaway owns Coca Cola and a large portion of their revenue comes from SNAP spending. Do you think he's going to let the party come to an end?
IF you do that, there will be way less fraud, but those who are scamming the system will just go back to selling the food for cash.
You mean shutdown, correct?
Yeah shutdown
I have been trying to think of an answer to the work requirements. That is a good first step. But, from what I see in my small rural community is the people that are abusing SNAP also lack good social skills. This limits them further from finding meaningful employment. So.....Is there a way we could create jobs for them without it becoming work camps? Could be maybe "outsource" some state funded jobs to SNAP recipients. Have a list they could choose from.
Some examples: Litter maintenance along roadways, Public Park maintenance and landscaping, Set up and take down for community events and holiday lighting. The list could go on. Problem being is making it work without being a socialist program.
I've been curious as to what happens come November 21. This is what Brave AI says:
There was more provided but this is the gist of it all. Am I missing where this is being discussed by Congress?
At this point we're most of the way to where Trump gets to make major slashes to the Federal Government. Why wouldn't the Republicans start voting 'NO' for the next few weeks so we can make it to 61 days? KEEP IT SHUT WE ARE ALMOST THERE!!!
I hear you. There are many more things that can be accomplished by waiting.
I can't seem to get past worrying about kids going hungry. I raised 3 kids by myself. My ex didn't pay child support but for a short time. I received food stamps one time, for a few weeks, then went and got my second job. As time went on I added another job. One job for each kid as my son says.
I have always said there are two things you cannot teach, but by example. Motivation, and initiative. I think we all agree the SNAP situation has gotten out of control. Too many taking advantage. But at the end of the day it is not the children's fault they have parents that lack motivation and initiative.
Well put
"Centrist dems"? Is there such a thing. I thought they were all commie socialist liberals...
eGOP are....THE ABOSOLUTE FUCKING WORST party in the history of mankind. Just fucking KILL IT. And Thune is the worst of the WORST. Can we please just kill GOP and move forward.
With what? President Trump ran and won the GOP!
Ummm...Trump had to pick a party and run and it sure as fuck wasn't going to be the Dems. So, whatever party system Trump is supporting and/or moving forward in terms of a coalition? Call it "MAGA" or whatever you want...but it isn't eGOP, FFS.
Ok well it's time they start reshaping it into something that resembles America First
100% -- screw these milquetoast tards screeching, "Well, Trump ran as a Republican!!" Trump is as far from GOP-ism as the USA is from fucking China, geographically.
Good!
Same in Pennsylvania.
Also went out to the same in Washington state according to a Truth social post I saw.
“READY TO CAVE” both parties have their PENISES stuck up the citizens ASS’s !
I hear that we only need one more vote.
But I have half a mind to wait until January when the subsidies go away.
I'm posting an update , just saw this when I walked in from church & fellowship, if no one beat me to it.
