Just found this from today on Daily Caller article -

A Cincinnati father received shocking photos showing his 6-year-old son bound with socks at the wrists and ankles inside a school van, triggering investigations by the district and police.

The incident occurred Thursday at Roberts Academy when staff restrained the boy during transport to an after-school program where he receives behavioral support services, according to Cincinnati Enquirer.

The boy’s teacher described the sequence of events in an email shared with the child’s aunt, Molly Perry.

The student had an outburst on the playground, kicking and screaming at a security guard. Staff tried to escort him to the van when he began hitting and kicking a teacher. He threatened to kill the teacher, according to the email.

An administrator suggested restraining the student. The teacher first turned the boy’s coat backwards with the zipper on his back. When that failed, a security guard retrieved tube socks from the van and tied the child’s wrists behind his back with one sock and bound his ankles with another.

Staff at Kids Thrive, the behavioral program, photographed the restraints and immediately contacted the family.

ā€œā€˜Daddy, at least the socks weren’t dirty. They were clean socks,'ā€ Gabriel Perry said his son told him, according to WLWT News 5.

Ohio law requires physical restraint only as a last resort when there is immediate risk of harm. Perry said no one from Roberts Academy contacted the family during the incident, Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Shitty people... everywhere. Burn it all down.

What would you suggest doing with a kid who is hitting and kicking violently? Just curious. I understand not tying him up and putting him in a van. What would you do instead?

You haven't seen special needs children flip out. You'd be shocked. I've seen a biting event where the "child" swallowed the flesh. I've seen a child take six adults to restrain. I've seen children that were trouble for police to handle. It's not normal but it is in a special needs environment.

I felt like you at the beginning of the article until I saw "behavioral help".

I’m sorry you’re getting downvoted, your language is colorful and maybe that’s why, but I agree, it’s a six year old. The fella blaming 100% on the parents, also, doesn’t have a clue. I’ve got an autistic son. The school literally attacked my child. It was abuse and eventually the state did own their butts. They woulda have zero issues tying up my child and throwing him away. And their stories were so far fetched with his ā€œviolenceā€, please. Truth all came out. And in the end, not only did my son end up band captain of his high school, they because state champions. Because of his leadership and work ethic, according to the band director. This kid’s turn around, I hope will be great, and to his parents, stay strong.

When I was 18, I worked with disabled adults and children that had violent outbursts. I am 5ft tall and weigh 100 lbs. We were trained to do a "take down" which sounds worse than it was. Essentially, it was the proper way to gently take control of the behavior and with our arms, in like a tight hugging motion subdue them until behavior passed or medical intervention was administered. Never EVER should anyone being hog tied. This is insane. If this is a school that handles behavioral students, they should be trained how to handle this without injury to the child or to themselves. Period. I hope the parents get a good lawyer!

I know a special ed teacher who got bit by a kid like this. She got a serious staph infection from it. Im not saying he needed to be bound but there has to be some way for them to control a kid they cant otherwise maintain.

Omg... that criminal child abuser needs to be severely punished fined and jailed. Both criminally by the state and civily by the parents. Lengthy sentence too and never employed again near children.

Corporal punishment was considered not helpful to education since the nineteenth C:

(AI) Corporal punishment in US schools was banned at the state level in a piecemeal fashion, with New Jersey banning it first in 1867. The majority of states have banned it, with the last states doing so in the early 21st century. For example, Hawaii banned it in 1973, while Ohio banned it in 2009 and New Mexico in 2011.

Restraints are not corporal punishment.

Kid should be expelled once he threatened the life of a teacher. No restraints needed.

If he was in any way injured by the restraints, then it is corporal punishment. He was being punished, OBVIO. And the injuries were to his body. So, corporal.

Not only was he tightly bound, he was biffed into a car.

How about the teacher aides who get the shit beat out of them trying not to be corporal? Is that corporal? But it's OK right because it's not your wife being beat up.

You're right, SOME kids derive no benefit. Others, well we don't know. But doing nothing got us to this point. I don't like the current state of affairs. Of prefer a little corporal punishment.

Wrong answer, Kids Thrive. Wrong answer, Cincinnati Public Schools. Wrong answer, school security guard.

I'm a parent who's had to deal with very hyper, sometimes unruly sons, and also had to help deal with my younger brother who was known to throw epic level tantrums, and there is absolutely NO REASON WHATSOEVER to restrain a 6 yr old child in this way.

If an adult can't constructively, physically, mentally, or emotionally deal with an unruly 6 yr old, there's something seriously wrong with the adults and not just the child.

If it was my child, I'd be suing everyone. And I'd also punch for charges filed, and if the Cincinnati PD doesn't want to, I'd sue the shit out of them, too.

Edit: the second elementary school I attended, for 5th and 6th grade, in Miami had a class full of disabled kids. As a way to help make them feel "normal" and part of the school's community, they allowd some fellow students to volunteer for a couple hours each day in their class. Those of us who were the most well behaved and were high academic achievers were selected. I and a couple of my friends were part of the volunteer group.

Those kids had some of the most debilitating disabilities and disorders a child could suffer. As a result, a lot of them were emotionally stunted or severely disturbed. And not one time were they ever physically restrained in any way. It's just not needed. Ever.

This particular episode really pisses me off.

Whan i was a kid I watched a 6th grader get n hold of a teachers tie and and nearly choke him to death. Another teacher had to hold thebkid in a bear hug and he got bit for it. It took another teacher to get the tie loose enough to take it off. Some of these issues are spiritual. I wouldnt make any universal declarations about this stuff. So ill tell you, restraint of s child is sometimes needed. There isnt a blanket standard.
