@realDonaldTrump
I have just approved TINY CARS to be built in America. Manufacturers have long wanted to do this, just like they are so successfully built in other countries. They can be propelled by gasoline, electric, or hybrid. These cars of the very near future are inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient and, quite simply, AMAZING!!! START BUILDING THEM NOW! Thank you to the DOJ and the Departments of Transportation and Environment. ENJOY!!! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Bring us the $14k Toyota Hilux.
I learned how to drive in that truck! On a manual! My dad insisted that I learn how to drive on a manual. I loved that damn truck. I've been wanting to buy a vintage one and fix it up.
YES!
As a quality of life feature. Can we also eliminate whatever regulation that lead to the creation of LED Headlights.
Good thinking!
Get all drunk or sober, non-english speaking or reading, illegals off of our roads first please.
Awesome! I hope this means that older Kei cars and trucks would be okay nationwide too. We've been needing this for years! 25 year rule applies. 🛻
How about a boxed frame, 1 ton diesel, with a standard transmission, analog gauges and manual windows. No egr, no dpf, no potentiometers in the doors.
Yes please
Good. Hopefully, this and the fuel economy standards that Trump already repealed will make it easier to make more reliable cars. The global warming nuts were making the car manufacturers reinvent the wheel constantly. Now, hopefully, they can choose the tried and true components engineered over the last fifty years to make great reliable and more simple vehicles.
Let China and Elon blaze the EV trail while the US and Japan perfect the Internal combustion engine vehicles and hybrids. I can’t exactly rationalize it, but I relate EVs to control and ICE vehicles to freedom.
We want tanks, sir.
No problem, you get a one-gallon tank with the car, two- gallon optional. 😁
Lol, good one.
How bout a flying car?
Ok cool. While we're at it can we bring back all the American car brands to their home towns
Why/how were American car makers not allowed to make them in the past? I can't find anything that's prevented them from making them in the past....
If you remember they did make smaller cars/trucks, then they kept getting bigger. I liked my '68 Bronco but then turned them into tanks.
Yeah, I remember....so how exactly were they prevented from making them?
The Chicken Tax and CAFE standards.
Long story short. The Chicken Tax put a tax on imported light Trucks to protect the Domestic Market. And the 1975 CAFE standard. Or Corporate Average Fuel Economy. Which essentially governed Fuel Economy. Raised the price on manufacturing smaller vehicles. The CAFE standard had a secondary set of rules and laxer standards meant for Heavy Work/Commercial vehicles.
Technological Limitations at the time. Combined with the CAFE standards meant things would get pricey for manufacturing personal vehicles/daily commuters.
But Corporate Lawyers however figured out that the laxer standards meant for Commercial Vehicles could apply to personal vehicles if they made personal vehicles heavier and larger. Hence it cut down on manufacturing costs for them. While allowing them to raise prices and pad their bottom line.
Which brings us to current day.
That’s a solid rundown of the Chicken Tax + CAFE mess, but notice what your own explanation actually shows: none of those laws prevented U.S. manufacturers from making tiny cars. They just made bigger vehicles more profitable.
So if that’s the case, then what exactly did Trump “approve”? Did he repeal the Chicken Tax? Rewrite CAFE? Create a new FMVSS class? If all the underlying rules are unchanged, then the bottleneck was never legality — it was corporate incentives.
In other words: Boardrooms chose SUVs because they made more money, not because the government banned small cars.
So the real question isn’t “why were we prevented from making them?” It’s “what policy changed today that suddenly forces manufacturers to build what they weren’t interested in yesterday?”
He repealed parts of CAFE actually via executive order.
I’d hazard a guess though given the major Automakers are already having issues moving their modern products and he just greenlit the importing of smaller Trucks.
Now they’re more so being forced into it. To preserve their already struggling market shares. Rather than any true desire on their part to begin producing smaller and cheaper vehicles.
I think you’re mixing up a couple things here.
Trump didn’t “repeal parts of CAFE by EO.” There is no Executive Order that did that — none that I can find, and none that exists in the Federal Register. Which EO are you referring to, exactly?
What you’re thinking of is the SAFE Vehicles Rule (2020) — a regulatory rollback, not an EO — and it didn’t repeal CAFE or remove any rule that ever prevented automakers from building tiny cars.
Nothing in CAFE ever prohibited kei-class cars in the U.S. Automakers chose not to make them because trucks and SUVs have far higher profit margins, and CAFE’s light-truck loophole made it easier to meet fleet standards by making vehicles bigger, not smaller.
So if Trump now says “START BUILDING TINY CARS,” he isn’t undoing any legal barrier. He’s trying to push the industry in a direction it has always been legally allowed to go — just one it has avoided because it’s less profitable.
Bottom line: This isn’t “government finally letting tiny cars exist.” This is “car makers never wanted to make a product with weak demand and thin margins.”
Every explanation in this thread has boiled down to the same thing: Americans largely don’t buy tiny cars, and automakers prefer higher-profit vehicles. That’s a market choice, not a legal prohibition.
So unless Trump plans to force manufacturers to build a product consumers don’t want and companies don’t profit from, I’m not sure what mechanism he supposedly “activated” here.
Fair point. I might just be mixing things up with something else he’s done. He’s signed a lot of stuff. Haven’t had the time to look deep into things of late either.
In the BOARD ROOMS! $$$$$ +people want more gizmos. $$$$$
Then what did Trump do to force companies to make a product they didn't want to make?
Not wanting to make cars that people apparently don't want to buy isn't quite the same as car makers being prevented from making them...
Let's instead make Americans rich so we can all drive huge-ass saloon cars and eff gas mileage. That would be cool.
Thank God! I am so sick of only being able to buy an overpriced SUV.
Small car, bigger bank account.
Faster death in crashes
That is a downside. Hopefully the roads will be safer by then.
Probably only marginally safer once you remove the people who can’t speak or read English from behind the wheel. As you’re still putting most of the responsibility on the general population to not be idiots behind the wheel of a vehicle. Not to mention drive competently.

Check Google on this, whole lot of negative press from the opposition as usual.

They can buy the expensive cars, then.

How tiny Mr President? Mini Cooper mk2 tiny?
Mini should be forced to change their name. They're huge! We don't need smaller cars as much as we need to stop making them bigger.
If you want a near life experience, drive a first gen Miata on the highway.
I mean the original Mini from the Italian Job movie, remember that?

Maybe something the kids can afford so they can drive to work.
