It will be interesting to see the regulatory backlash from the Governments. It appears Western Australia has been a trial run. The new WA firearm regulations are quite severe.

Firearms are heavily regulated. Semi automatics are restricted to professional pest control Shooter's and some farmers.
Mechanical, ie, bolt action, lever action with a magazine capacity of 10 rounds are legal.
Hand guns are also heavily regulated usually requiring membership of a pistol club. This is not a problem.
There are over 4 million registered (legal) firearms and believed to be somewhere between 1 million to 6 million unregistered (illegal)firearms.
That's an astonishing amount almost 1 for every 2-3 people here
