He simply would not allow her to speak for herself.
Her husband come off like an absolute dickhead so I can't imagine her situation at home was a good one. In her case I didn't see any obvious signs of what appeared to be physical abuse. But I have no doubt there was probably some psychological abuse taking place. Sadly, she was not the only woman that I have met in a similar situation.
