You are inaccurate. Between income tax, other federal taxes (gasoline, cigarettes, etc.), and federally caused inflation, we are paying over half our income.
You can look at the federal budget yourself and see that they are wasting over half of it. Check the Constitution. Most federal expenditures are 100% unconstitutional.
Most of the federal government's expenditures are the military, Social Security, and Medicare/Medicaid. None of these is unconstitutional. I agree that most military spending is clearly wasteful, but there is no appetite to reduce it.

Taxation helps control the money supply, which In turn helps control inflation. You wouldn't want a currency that never inflates or that deflates.
