You know for long time, we (U.S) has not been able to make anything. I know some people still know how to make clothes. Personally, I know how to make medicines (herbal). Tech stuff, someone else like Elon needs to look at putting up the factory.
This type of thing occurs with lots of large manufacturers. Caterpillar and John Deere will not allow their customers to repair their own units. When I was working for a very large company purchasing large amounts of equipment, I wrote the specification that stated the companies who wanted to bid must also provide the repair computers and codes or we would not accept their bids. They squealed but complied. The US Government is much larger than my company was, and can easily include language in the specifications that prevents a company from raping the tax payers for a $3 part.
You know those puzzle locks lug nuts that people buy to prevent theft of their fancy wheels? Caterpillar uses something similar so that only Caterpillar mechanics who have a special factory tool can remove the injectors. I know because my former boss had a 90 foot yacht with twin Cat V12 power.
It is unfortunate that people don't realize they have been screwed until they need to make repairs. Then the repairs will cost 4 times more than they should because they must go to the manufacturer.
Possibly intentional bs by numerous bad actors. (They're everywhere.)
Things don't get as bad as they currently are without a lot of bureaucracy/"red tape"/convoluted "everything", "not giving a sh-t", "looking the other way", "letting things slide", "skimming a little off the top", "scratching someone's back"(in return for something), blackmail, bribery, grifting/stealing, blatant fraud and abuse, sabotage, and sheer incompetence/stupidity.
Normally the government has walk in rights. It sounds like they are fixing it, but I would have blackballed the company. No more contracts. I know a company that would be happy to replace that radio to spec. They specialize in electronic equipment that has aged out. The company doesn’t make a board anymore with certain chips, etc.
They provide brand new older equipment.
My brother used to work there and basically ran the show. A new owner comes in and decides that my brother wasn’t happy enough and let him go. Totally weird.
I frankly don't understand the impasse. Why didn't the government make ownership of the IP part of the contract award? That was the usual course of business in my time. In this case, the government owns the other side of the interface, so recompete for the knob. (Sounds like it should be replaced anyway, if it breaks so often under normal use.)
For a little more you could make an injection molded knob in your garage... and not a crappy 3DP one that will never be durable enough...You steady craftin? Shout out to the Crafsman
Part of the problem is the govt is an absolute mofo to do business with as a small business or vendor. Most have no idea... it's hellacious.
Congress is stupid for:
Fully agree. Supply chain security for replacement parts, for every component in the helicopter should be part of the initial deal.

They want you to believe it’s just incompetence. It’s not. It’s planned theft.

Many such cases.
I hope someone see this.
Redesign it and print it anyway.

Whoever makes that device is literally PRINTING MONEY. 40K? damn!
I'm surprised they don't have a McDonald's ice cream machine in the helicopter.
I would be looking at which Congressmen have stocks in the company!
Our rights don’t matter when it comes to “national security”
But military industrial complex rights definitely matter more than national security.
