Science is not a consensus field, just because some (or more) agree, it doesn't mean they are right. Science, and scientists should be questioning everything. Never settle because, hey we all agree!
You are certainly correct that it should not be a consensus popularity party, but it is a sad truth that certain areas of science are laboring under heavy hands of dogma: cosmology, geophysics, quantum physics, astronomy. (I'm only speaking of what I am familiar with. I'm not precluding other fields from having problems.) Researchers who do not go along with "the paradigm" are ignored, dismissed, and hindered. Controversies are never resolved; they are squelched by the victors.
It is enough to make one a cynic.
