True. We were specifically instructed not to get involved in any fight. But obviously we could defend ourselves with a truncheon. The drawback of that was that if we did so, we then, back at the station, had to spend ages filling out a form titled something like "Justification For Exposing Truncheon in Public". I kid you not!
One teensy problem was that the truncheon was held in an inside leg pocket and, in order to run without dead-legging yourself, you had to either hold it tightly or pull it out of its pocket.
