"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." - John Adams, signatory the Declaration of Independence, framer of the Constitution, Second President of the United States.
Jesus placed charity on believers as direct personal action the Good Samaritan shows no appeal to Caesar or new government offices ever entered the command.
Jesus meant it, Socialists don't want to feed the poor as it would make them less hungry for revolution. More than a few Fabians have said this through the years, rich and intellectual Fabians
The real problem is when a politician talks about feeding the poor the poor never get fed. The politicians and to many of their buddies are lined up at the trough and it is empty before the poor ever get in line.
There has been a pretend war on poverty for decades, and yet there are still millions of poor. That is evidence that the programs are only feeding corrupt politicians and their friends. The actual money that goes to the welfare of poor is a fraction of what is spent.
The lip service to a war on poverty is to keep the ignorant poor on the plantation.
Because a legal mandate is not charity; it is theft, taking something under threat of punishment. True charity is a gift of love, without hidden motives.
Freely have ye been given; therefore thou shalt freely give.
The fact is that government was never granted or delegated the power to use public funds for charity, welfare, relief, aid, or any other term that take from one and gives to another.
The powers delegated are few, enumerated, and limited. If it was not explicitly delegated then government cannot do it. No exceptions.
Charity is an individual voluntary act of love and personal sacrifice to help others.
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
¶
“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
I see nothing here about forcing others to give through the government.....
I'm as conservative as they come, but I think one of the richest nations in the world should have a social safety net in [current year]. It's a surprising liberal streak I find in myself.
No one in the USA should starve or be out in the cold due to lack of funds. It just doesn't make sense. That's not an "ISM" that's just the common good.
The PROBLEM is when people live in the safety net and abuse the system. It's prolific. People have made a science out of graft and sloth.
The Bible says "The poor you will have with you always" and also says "if you don't work you don't eat" and I don't disagree with that.
If someone is truly disabled I have no grudge against them being supported by the state, see line 1.
If someone loses their job, has few marketable skills, and finds themselves broke and in trouble, say, in a recession, again line 1. The state will give this person assistance and some marketable skills at the local community college. There is no problem with that.
BUT
If someone is just a lazy greedy bum and they are given a leg up by the system and they refuse to help themselves, they should be cut off and black balled. Boom. Brutal and cruel? no. Tough love.
In other words, I want people to get helped back on their feet, AND eliminate the abuse and fraud.
I am the poor. I give upwards of 70% of my income in taxes already. If they took 90% I would be significantly poorer and still receiving 0 of the things they are taking my money to help the poor with.
This isnt about saying no to helping the poor. Its about saying no to tyranny while being the poor receiving no help.

Back in the day (your grand parents and older) Christian Charity wa how it worked, then Government got involved and pushed them out.

It’s a massive grift

If they gov. Didn't tax people so much, they could give more to churches and charities.
Also I have no problem with the gov actually feeding the poor. But they went to far with how they run the programs and the waste fraud and abuse.
Robbery and charity are two different moral things. The left calls it "redistributing the wealth" to disguise robbery as charity.

You can't steal from people, keep most of the money yourself, and then hand out some pennies to the poor.
