A great analogy that someone came up with is that the good masks (like at least the N95's and up) work like a slide. After watching "Europa: The Last Battle" its a 12 hour doc about pre-ww2 stuff, some pre-ww1 stuff, and some misconceptions and outright lies about nazi germany.
It also explains a lot of the political climate back then. So after watching that i can safely say that "given the level of propaganda and false populism" that you refer to the nazis imo is actually just propaganda to make you think that the german populous was indeed duped by the nazis, basically just like how the MSM is telling people that Trump supporters are duped by Trumps lies. (if you watch the doc you will see the exact same tactics used by the MSM nowadays to Trump being used againts hitler)
I'm not outright telling you to believe this as a fact, but i do recommend you to watch it, you know just to see if the story that it tells makes more logical and rational sense other than the consensus that the majority now has. The doc, given how much context it gives and how much misconceptions it cleared up made me able to see what was happening to Trump immediately 4 years ago. There's so many parallels.
