A lot of people invest in Vanguard or BlackRock products like ETFs, mutual funds, etc. Some choose to, some have to (limited offering in their 401Ks, IRAs, etc), or they entrust their financial wellbeing to a typical Financial advisor.
If you would like to track the S&P 500 you could invest in the Vanguard ETF : VOO — if you look at the basket of stocks, all the big cap names are there.
So it’s not like Vanguard or BlackRock specifically own for themselves, they are using your money to own these baskets. Then you vote on company matters via Proxy which I highly doubt is ever correct or accurate.
It’s better for you to just own the company stock yourself, and not give your money to these large institutions. Do your research, and invest accordingly.
It’s stupid that a lot of people entrust their money to Financial Advisors, 99.9999% of them are useless imo.

Agree with you on non-invasive tech, it’s by far a better approach and far more challenging. Even that tech can be used for nefarious purposes as well. I’m of the mind that if you’re able to ‘Read’ something you’re able to ‘Write’ something.
For example, if we were able to ‘Read’ neural pathways as a wearable, it mean our understanding of these pathways are so damn good we’re easily able to Manipulate them from the outside-in.
I fear that Tech will continue to advance regardless, it’s bound to happen. Perhaps there is one factor that we have yet to fully appreciate … neuroplasticity? Or perhaps the ability for us to improve upon our own mind-body function? Etc.
This discussion reminded me of a Bill Gates video presentation where he explained how when humans live longer (improved health) the population growth flattens out (less children).
Now, I think all that is just a smokescreen for these Transhumanist to want to live longer, and enjoy their riches (resources, energy, money, etc) at the expense of the cattle-class (you and me).
But the irony is it’s doomed to fail, I believe. The Transhumanist will slowly wither out of existence, all the while the conversatives will continue to have more kids and teach values.
