Hijack to say: Operation Christmas Child boxes with Samaritans Purse is legit, I have personally seen it change kids lives. This is one to get involved with. Red Cross, on the other hand....
Most people know someone, or know someone who knows someone, who could use some help. Illness, loss of job, medical issues for a child, whatever. If you don't know someone who needs help, ask friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and help them, directly. A few hundred dollars given directly to a family in need (or in lieu of cash, - supplies) can make an enormous difference and directly helps them rather than 97% going to 'administrative' costs.
Agreed, we prefer to help people directly, also much more gratifying. Anonymously when possible. Other times when beyond our ability to help we have organized a fund raising event. I wouldn't give anything to a large charity.
Agree - most charities spend so much on administration and overhead, it is criminal how much money the big wigs make. We live in a small town and have used our "covid" money which was really extra for us and paid electric bills anonymously directly to the electic company for several people we know who are struggling from the ongoing shut down and layoffs here in Washington state. It is comforting for us to know it really helps people we know who need the hand up, it is also fun to hear about them thinking it is some random rich person or customer helping them out.
A better solution. No more tax dollars to non essential organizations. We get to decided where our donations go if we choose to donate. Criminal I'm supporting self supportive organizations like PBS, NPR, PP and every other left wing sham without a voice and that I do not use.
After trillions and trillions donated to the American Cancer Society... we are still using the same treaments used 30 years ago and they aren't even close to curing the disease. It is a sham.
One thing that DOES make a difference, I’ve seen it personally, is Operation Christmas Child Boxes with Samaritans Purse. That literally changes kids lives. Everything else, no
The only thing I’ve ever given money to in my 43 years alive is the Donald J. Trump campaign. Money well spent and I was promised a buy one get one free.
Many years ago, I had a coworker who's wife was Vietnamese. Every year they would visit Vietnam. They supported an orphanage. They would fill up their baggage with things that were needed; toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, toys, bedding, etc.. They would ask some of their close friends to contribute. They said that it was useless to donate money or to go through a NGO because it would never get to the people that it was intended for.
Just do your research and see how much actually goes to the cause. There are a lot of great charities that need your help. But as someone said, start local.
Nope. For most people the root problem is not money. Whether it be local homeless people or impoverished people abroad, most often broader assistance is required.
This assistance is often provided by organizations with the skills to provide reorienting assistance.
OP is correct that the big organizations are dubious at best in their spending habits, but there are many small organizations that do outstanding work. They don't make the news, but why would they if they are not part of the machine?
If you care about life changing help, chances are that a small organization will be able to bring this about better than you could on your own because generating lasting change takes more time, energy, and commitment than most people have to offer.
Giving money to a homeless person in a parking lot might make you feel good, but without sustained contact and commitment it is unlikely to result in long term positive change.
Don't get me started on "Cancer Research" charities. Talk about a black hole.
Just making more of that Rockefeller poison and calling it medicine.
Komen give me the money!
Any charity that is big and known is most likely a scam. That goes triple for one that advertises on TV

United way, avoid it.
Yes!
The Salvation Army is pretty good. Local support agencies, like food banks, rescue missions are usually a better bet.
At the same time it is a huge bloated cult.
I already give thousands a year to charity, involuntarily.
It’s called taxes.

Don't trust people enough to give them money to 'do good' on my behalf...
Rather just do good myself if the opportunity arises in my immediate vicinity..
Yeah! Someone bake me some sugar cookies!
So true and I donated a chunk of change to the American Red Cross after 9/11.
I help out a single mother I know, financially. I feel that's my tithing, giving back. I don't give to charity anymore.

I give to local cat rescue organizations and people who feed neighborhood cats. I recommend it highly ?
Great post.
GIVE LOCALLY.
DEATH TO SMOOTCHIE
NPR and PBS too

I never give money to the homeless, only because it just goes straight to drugs.
