You can only trust things that can be proven, with the proof itself able to be verified. Sort of like the scientific method applied to everything in life. Be skeptical, and realize that everything you think you know are only things that have not yet been proven false by a single contradictory fact (which must itself be verified, of course).
It's not that big of a deal if you are accustomed to thinking along the lines of the scientific method... so there's that.
Yeah the technology exists but you have to have a ton of people skilled at doing it who won't talk about it. It took Disney months just to fake Luke Skywalker for a few shots in The Mandalorian and it still doesn't look quite right. I'm not saying the news isn't propaganda, and yes, perhaps even doctored in some cases, but I have yet to hear about a credible case of the media using deepfakes or cgi and claiming its real. It's also near impossible to do stuff like this on a live broadcast.
