That wouldn’t surprise me. I have little experience with social workers and don’t want to paint the profession with a broad brush, but am very familiar with a particular one in Tulsa. He’s a convicted felon (recidivist) that did time for trafficking meth and other drug-related charges. He’s also a huge Biden supporter and devout “Orange man bad” progressive. He previously worked at a local drug treatment facility until recently earning a Master’s in Social Work. To top it off, he enables his best friend, a DACA recipient who refuses treatment for borderline personality disorder and has a profound cocaine habit. The DACA recipient’s cousin, also here illegally, traffics coke in the area.
I'm a social worker that works with any type of population you name it. From personal experiences; I will never get one-on-one with any of my clients, even when I'm a tall woman, any male client with the right amount of drugs on their system or lack of medication can AND WILL overpower me.
Every time I have been in similar situations, you know what I do? I CALL THE POLICE.
This whole thing is just ridiculous!! This is part of "defund the police" So stupid. Today the front page of my CIA USA today paper had a big picture of a man who was going to be the person to do this kind of work. It turned out to be a woman, but who could tell, and then it was revealed that she had a "bachelors degree in psychology". Like that was equipping her to do this kind of thing. What a joke. The terminal degree in psychology is a doctorate, not a bachelors degree. Don't make me laugh, and BTW, a Ph.D would also be out of his or her league in this kind of situation. I'm glad the guys in the picture were laughing, because that is the proper response.
It isn’t a bad thing to try this in TANDEM with law enforcement kind of like negotiators working with bomb squads. The mistake is to rely on them alone
social workers all start off as 20 something bar whores. they check in on families still all strung out from the night before they know it they're 40 something childless and with 15 cats they call their babies
Back in the day, I recall training a social worker to defuse just this type of situation. She became quite proficient, though she had a really small apartment and cats.
It seems like cops should be all for this because:
You don't have to get into no-win situation, where at best, you're only covered in poop at the end of the day and at worst you're called a murder for having to do a job no one else was willing to do (until now) or you just end up dead yourself from the situation.
The fact is that many large cities already have social workers with the police. And many police officers have trained in de-escalation. They are commonly sent out to civil disturbances.
While I agree with the social working concept I don’t think it can entirely replace police officers but some of these people truly do need a trained individual due to their mental illness.
