Coincidentally, I took some psychology courses while in college and had this one professor who taught about CD at length as part of his course. It was what he wrote his dissertation in while working with clinically insane inmates.
Taught us all about how the human mind will subconsciously "ignore" the problems it feels are too damaging to that person's psyche and mental well being by forcing the conscious brain to "justify" the behaviors that leads the brain to figure certain truths out that may lead to a mental breakdown. People are literally trying to justify the behaviors of evil pieces of shit in this society, even though most of us aren't evil pieces of shit and they inherently know that their justifications are wrong, because their brains literally can't handle the truth that's right in front of them. So, they create as many reasons as they can to accept the behaviors of others in a cognitively dissonant way, and they don't even know they're doing it. It's a very fascinating subject for me. It also explains why some people (4-6%) will never accept the truth. It's also why Q has said that if the truth came out in the manner most of us prefer, it would land shit loads of Normies in the hospital.
Here's a few seeds to start studying. Read about Paul's defense in Acts 24, too: he always maintained a blameless conscience; his cognitive dissonance was forced to a head by Christ himself. And that is what the gospel does even now.
