Actually..not uncommon. My father n I worked in book manufacturing.
It depends on the publishers demands.
We did plenty of hand laid gold leaf..artisans..a skill lost now.
Could be a personal journal...they often have all the fancy bling
100 percent agree. It looks like a journal / date book / record book. I'd guess gilded edges for him because 'austerity does not work with 45' usually. And it will be in his POTUS library someday..
When I finished my MS thesis in 1983, I had some old bookbinder make three copies for me. He was an immigrant right after WWII and he got a job with the Federal Government at National Archives?, not sure of the details, but he either learned there, or was hired because he already knew. He did an awesome job with the binding! It is probably very difficult to find anyone who could do this today.
I own both the King James and NIV bibles on Gameboy. King James is more accurate, NIV has more minigames. My brother modified my King James cart to work on Gameboy Advance. My Sunday school teachers sure didn't like that I kept bringing my Gameboy with me.
Kinda looks like a bible. I don't know too many books with what appears to be a gold trim around the pages. Just an observation.
I know study bibles have pages specifically to write notes on.
The gilding isn't just for show.
It also seals the pages so moisture doesn't ruin the fringe.
Avoiding moisture is necessary for thinner paged books.

Book is too thin to be a bible
Game Boy Bible is a bit smaller: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/WkcAAMXQVT9S0sYB/s-l640.jpg

depends on the print style used. I have one that is smaller than that one.
