by starting their own Patriot Party, they would split their existing base into two smaller camps and ensure that neither the Republicans nor Trump would ever win re-election again.
I can see both arguments for that. Get new people into the main party, or strike out on your own and take over half the support from the old party. You won't have just that initial 55%-60% from the old party after a few years. You might get a lot more after 2 years or so.
