I live in ground zero for the cicadas. They are everywhere. I was working outside over the weekend and had 2-3 on me at almost any given time. They are getting in my house. My deck is littered with them. What's strange though, is you can go 2 mi away and minimal cicadas. At least they don't do damage to anything.
They are the size of a thumb. I don't even notice them when they crunch underfoot anymore. I've taken to wearing a worn out pair of sneakers with no tread. Easier to scrape off.
Great timing! this is essentially how they function, they don't really have mouths or anything to use to defend itself. They basically mate and die. They are a great food source for many animals. Because of this they typically go dormant for a prime number of years (3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, etc.) that way two swarms are less likely to popup at the same time. They just produce lots of babies in hopes that some survive. Pretty cool. I wonder if this is just a single swarm or multiple that happened to fall on the same year.
Im up in the area pede, come to find out this is the 17 year batch. No lie, it is biblical and the being the 17 year cycle leads me to believe the plan is coming along nicey
This is brood X. They pop up every 17 years and are the biggest one time population of cicadas we get. It’s pretty cool to watch the process happen, but not fun walking outside and not being able hear anything but them screaming. At least they have a normal sleep cycle....
Just for the record, cicadas are NOT the same thing as locusts. Locusts will decimate plants and crops. Cicadas are just looking for a good time before they die.
Locusts are far worse. There was a locust swarm making its way across Africa (last year?) reaching into the Middle East, but no news outlet seem to be covering it anymore.
I know my sister who lives in the DC area said they were so loud you cannot even hear the person next to you talking. Said it was driving her nuts when she went for her daily walks.

The reason America doesn’t have locust is a beautiful story of God’s response to true repentance and faith. Since locust were off the menu, how bout blow in some really loud bugs instead. God’s timing is a beautiful thing to watch.

Reminds me of Sand Merks from the vintage movie Flight of Dragons. Cant seem to find a clip of it. Nasty creatures that made horrible noises to the point of making people quickly go insane. An attack by the enemy in the movie. And it was quite debilitating just the noise.

I remember last time this happened in VA. Was in HS, we use to grab a handful and throw them around in the crowded halls after lunch. Good times
