Why 26k years? What happened then?
To understand the 26,000 years Leo David mentions, we should first understand the Earth has a very slow wobble to it's 23.5 degree axis. This is called 'precession' and its effect on earth-bound observers is to cause an equally slow cyclical slippage of the belt of the cluster of stars known as the zodiac against the rising point of the sun. The knowledge of precession and its astronomical use is before historical records. We know the knowledge survived great catastrophes and the deluge.
