Check out the work of Joel Richardson and/or Walid Shoebat. Their book, God's War on Terror, maps the antichrist's kingdom to islam, not a secular government. In this verse, their claim is that "mark" is translated better as a "badge of servitude", as ISIS and AQ are regularly seen with head or arm bands with the islamic creed on them.
Shoebat also identifies Mecca/S.A. as Babylon and oil as the "wine" which she drank with all the kings of the world. Good parallel drawn but I have to think he is perhaps a little too anti-Islam to consider other nuances.
Remember, the Apostle John was a mystic - as is his apocalypse a mystical book. It must not be held too tightly and made dogmatic. Greek, as well as Hebrew, can allow for looser interpretations because there is not an exact word for word translation in most cases. Both prepositions could be used with this passage as is the case for many verses of Biblical text. There are also several textural variants among the Greek Apostolic writings that should be compared.
Biblical text is layered. There is always the plain meaning of a text as well as deeper spiritual interpretations that can be extracted from the same verse. The foundation must be strong and firm, but what is built upon that foundation has room for exploring additional meanings derived from the text. This is where some really exceptional nuggets in understanding can be found if one is open when digging for the treasure.

Interesting, but a tattoo is actually in your skin, not on it. The reason a tattoo lasts is because the ink is trapped in your middle layer of skin.
Also there seems to be no argument it is either in/on your right hand or forehead.
