I heard about 6 or 7 months ago that there was going to be deliberately caused shortages of cold medicines in the UK and possibly some places in the EU. If someone from the UK is lurking here, maybe you could let us know whether this is true. When I heard it I wondered whether some variant was going to resemble more of a cold than the flu. So, by drying up all the OTC remedies they may have thought they would somehow make people sicker to continue to drive the narrative.
