I had a dear, dear friend, who went to performing school with Shirley Temple, Mickey Rooney, and Judy Garland. She was a traveling dancer with her brother, and they even traveled to England on a ship to perform there. They used to purchase choreography routines from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

This occurred in Miss Hattie's Home for Girls, an orphanage. You got put in the Box of Shame if you failed to sell your quota of cookies. The girls got sent out every day to sell cookies to earn their keep -- sort of like Girl Scout cookies.
