I just received a text from my neighbor that we seem to be experiencing a flour shortage in our area (Northern CA). She said that Costco is out and the manager said he didn’t know “if or when” they will get more. I’m trying to figure out if this is a broader issue. She said she knows of at least one other store that does have some in stock right now and to grab it quick if we need some.
Anyone else experiencing this?
It'll be 2-3 months before there is a massive shortage.
Maybe sooner as people realize the Winter wheat crop was a disaster.
That’s good to know.
Ordered 150 lbs of oats that didn't come today but I have @ 550 lbs of various types of wheat stored and a flour mill to use to make it
I got a 12-pack of ramen noodles.
Lol gotta start somewhere
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! We like those. We add our dehydrated stuff to them, too.
You're ready for anything! LOL
Canned baby corn spears and blanched broccoli work very well to turn cheap ramen into a delicious meal. I bought almost every different brand and flavor of ramen so I could sample them all and find a few I enjoyed. Indomie and Maggi Fusian are my favorites without containing toooooo much sodium. I also throw away the fried noodle bricks and cook non-fried noodles to make it healthier.
Still lots on shelves here and I have two 40lb bags!
Awesome!! Glad you have what you need and are well stocked.
For months, you couldn't find flour here anywhere, especially the big 50 lb bags. Also yeast and other breadmaking supplies. It's been available everywhere for the past few months. I did see somewhere the other day that Costco has been running out of emergency supply types of goods and people were obviously stockpiling flour when it disappeared. I would guess rice, beans, other items that are easy to store and have a fairly long shelf life.
I've found that the smaller, regional grocery chains have had supplies when they disappear everywhere else. Lately, they had plenty of chicken when Walmart had none. Also if you have any kind of Amish bulk foods seller, they're a great source of things like flour.
One thing I've found scarce everywhere - catfood. Not dogfood.
Cat food issue I believe is aluminum shortage
There's no shortage of dog food.
But if I recall dog food is usually packed in larger steel cans and cat food in the smaller aluminum ones. Idk for sure I don't buy wet food for the dog
I don't know where you got this from but it makes no sense. Have you seen canned Pepsi and Coke disappear from the shelves, aluminum foil? Of course not. Smaller cans of catfood are the ones I've been most able to find, they look like aluminum. The larger catfood cans are steel and the hardest to find has been Meow Mix, which is in plastic containers.
Cat owners have also seen shortages of litter and dry food, which have absolutely nothing to do with any aluminum.
Idk just a thought. Maybe the cabal just hates cats?
LOL or cat people. I really believe they're purposely trying to drive us all insane with one crazy-making ploy after another. So they work on cat people for awhile, then, who knows - knitters and crocheters suddenly can't find yarn anywhere? No, wait, we all hoard yarn like maniacs so that won't work. I personally could crochet everyone in the state a sweater or throw without ever buying another skein. Okay, how about this - days before the Superbowl, beer disappears from the shelves along with chips, dip and chicken wings. They're already doing chicken wings so I may be on to something here.
That's probably the plan. Dick with all the little subgroups and blame other subgroups for the dickery.
"You know you can't get cat food in tiny cans bc ppl won't get vaxxed so the plant can't find workers."
"You know there's a yarn shortage because the football fans have to have jerseys AND hats for their favorite teams"
Lol
For the cans
Yes, cat food has been a problem! I’ve definitely seen a scarcity of emergency supplies. No Amish bulk food places anywhere near me. I bet that would be a fantastic resource!!
If you have an indoor farmers' market anywhere, I'll bet there's someone selling bulk items. You can find them online too. I bought a bunch of bulk nuts and vacuum sealed them for our stash. There's an Amish bulk market about 45 miles from us. It's well worth the trip. You name it, they have it in bulk and one huge section of various types of flours, yeast, gluten, anything needed for baking. They even have jello and pudding in bulk plus Amish made cheeses. Noodles, candy, rice, chips and other snacking things, gravy and soup mixes.
Cat food has been hard to find longer than anything. I started buying a few any time it was in stock many months ago. Buster the cat says, "Good mama! Prrrr-rrrr-rrrr."
I got a few bags at Aldi and vacuum sealed them in 6 cup portions, vacuumed sugar and rice, too.
Does that last any much longer than just storing in the freezer? Asking because that is where I store my extra baking essentials.
I would assume so. I missed a bag when sealing them and out it's in there.

Great idea to vacuum seal! I need to pick up more bags to do that!
My local Aldi was bare as fuck! Like BAD!
That sucks!! Hope you are able to get what you need!
I did. It was just an observation. It was actual panic level bare. Thankfully I'm prepped pretty good already.
I live in a small country town in Aus and couldn’t get flour for a few weeks but this last week they had some so I bought plain flour and a big bag of bread flour. Seems to go in runs of what’s on the shelf and what there’s shortages of. They’ve had very little pet food these last few weeks, thankfully the stock feeders have had bags of dry food.
Wow! Glad you were finally able to get some!! We had a cat food shortage. I stocked up just before it happened but we’ve been going through it quickly. It’s getting close to time to stock up again.
A good long term storage item for baking
Red Feather Butter from New Zealand. It's canned and lasts 10+ years.
Also Bega Cheddar Cheese from Australia. also canned lasts 7-10 years.
No flour shortage here in SoCal. But we have been waiting for auto body parts for my car for 2 months now
So sorry for the delay! Seems that auto parts have been a huge problem for a lot of people! Hope you get what you need soon!
My costco had plenty of flour. I personally don't eat wheat but look into bulk buying of wheat berries. Wheat flour won't last as long anyway,
I've read you can mylar bags and 02 absorb it and get a decent shelf life almost comparable to berries
haven't seen a flour shortage, but I've noticed a definite change in the way things made with flour taste.
bread isn't the same, and often just crumbles. I've tried multiple brands and none of them are very good. donuts and cakes don't taste right either.
Interesting… I haven’t been buying as many products with flour in it as I’ve been making more of it myself. I wonder what is causing it to taste and feel different?
Winter wheat issues maybe? Lower protein and gluten in the the output
I'm in Northern California. Bought some canned pumpkin online for my dog, my mom's dog and pies. Limited to 5 cans. Never limited before. (Canned pumpkin helps if a dog has an upset stomach/diarrhea).
No flour shortage here. Just bought a #5 bag of Arthur's All purpose for around $6.57. Plenty of various types of flour to be found here on the store shelves.
What do you use white flour for - do you make your own bread?
I make different types of bread, cakes & cookies. Depends on the circumstance and /or event I’m baking for.
That's awesome. I just eat different things and not much flour or bread or sugar, although hardtack made from flour is perfect for prepping because it literally lasts forever. Literally.
I make my own bread and cakes. I don’t live in the townsite but out on a farm so it saves me driving to town every day. :)
That's awesome. I was just curious because I live in the suburbs and I can't remember the last time I bought flour... I've got some in the pantry that probably expired years ago because I buy bread from the grocery store and I don't make cakes. I figured that'll be the case but was curious anyway.
It’s not hard to do ,all you need is the ingredients. They taste better as well. I started making bread as a lot of the time by the time I got to the store they didn’t have any bread left on the shelf, the joys of living in the country . Lol.
It is also a great way to get out the frustrations as one kneads the dough. I make sure all my thoughts stay as positive, or at least as neutral as possible. After all, everything tastes better when made with love!
I used to have it just sit in my pantry forever. But my kids really like it when I bake so I’ve been working at doing more of it for them. 🥰
Thanks for the heads up. Just picked up 4x50 pound bags of flour. Plenty on the shelves here but it sounds like not for long.
Wow!! You’ll be good to go!! Glad you were able to stock up!
Indeed.
I have 20 cases of wheat (6 - #10 cans each, nitrogen packed) as well as rye, corn, etc.
Also several cases of Augason Farms flour, bread mix, pancake mix etc.
Awesome!! Sounds like you are well set!!
Been prepping for nearly 40 years. Some think I'm crazy LOL.
I do wish I was more rural.
Wheat prices are rising rapidly. So, you might want to invest in a big ole sack of flour now.
Well, dont complain that you didnt know this was coming. We have been screaming about it for months!
