I’ve got Rhode island reds, been laying for three months now, white ducks (they lay year round and are good for meat), ghuinnes, pea fowl, bob white quail, golden pheasant, turkeys, a milk cow and three yearlings, half a dozen hogs, and catfish in my private little pond. 20 acres all grassland, with a windmill/waterwell and solar, propane generators for power back up in case electricity goes out.
Big garden last two years and already prepping for this year. I’ve got cherry, apple, peach, pear, plum and fig trees planted (bared fruit last year); Orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, banana, coconut trees in greenhouse (they come out after the last freeze and had their first fruits last year).
I have a grinder for wheat or corn flour. I churn my own butter and cheese. I’m a baker and have plenty put back.
If that all fails, there are herds of mule dear and antelope that cross the back of the property every couple of days for water and corn!
Normal size green house, 10-12 feet at its tallest and about 10-12 feet wide.
The tropical trees are dwarf cross hybrids I did myself with a little help from the master green thumb in my family, my mom.
Still need few things. Need a couple of sheep or alpacas, and some goats for the wool. I’ve got a couple of horses. Looking for a couple of mules or draft horses and a wagon.

All my birds are free range in an enclosed pen that is moved every couple of days and are penned up at night. We’ve got coyotes, owls, and hawks that’ll make a mess if they could get to them.
It has its ups and downs, just like anything else. Lots of hard work, but the rewards are worth it.
I know exactly where my food came from and what’s in it. We even built a small smokehouse last year, home smoked meats, my goodness the differences in taste and texture is amazing. Thinking about putting in an old fashioned ice house, doing research on it now.

I had two monster roos. Brutus and Cashus. Those fukers would come at me when I first got them. Took a handful of punts until they figured out I was the top Alpha. They would gang rush the neighbors two black labs if they dared get to close to the barn. Those mfrs didnt fuk around when it came to those hens.
Most of a large steer, 1/2 a hog, lots of fish, and several smoked chickens in the freezer. Lot's of wild game around. Just expanded my garden to nearly an acre.
Finished using another 8lbs of propellant in my reloading room. Let's roll.
I haven't used azure yet but have had my eye on them a few years now. I'm grain free and would love if my chickens were grain free too, but not sure if we can pull that off at this time. They are about 3 weeks old right now, still littles but getting bigger each day. Haven't fed them steak yet, have been giving them lots of scrambled eggs though which they go crazy for.
my first and oldest duck died today 😔 I loved her, but I plucked and gutted her and now she's waiting to be roasted this weekend. RIP Frankie. Working on getting pigs to breed, geese laying on nest, hens laying almost daily. Almost ready for an apocalypse...still have to put down seeds in the garden..
Funny story—my folks used to have a really old one named “Granny”. She had a sway back but she was such a good cow mom, we kept her until she was super old. One day, they called the mobile butcher out to turn Granny into hamburger, but we didn’t want the younger kids to see them kill the cow, so Mom was supposed to take them into town. But she got a phone call and didn’t get out in time (this was long before cell phones, obviously) and my little brothers saw them shoot the old cow. As Mom was peeling out of the driveway, they started screaming, “THEY JUST SHOT GRANNY!” They told this to everyone—we had a lot of ‘splaining to do about who “Granny” actually was. LOL
She might taste great. But I know with every synchopated chew my mind would be screaming "granny, granny..." and I would see granny looking at me in my mind's eye.. And that would gross me out.
I did cry a little, and had to cover her head to make the first cut...but it was a better option for me than to waste the meat or bury her for a dog/possum/raccoon to dig up...
Patara, on Appalachia's Homestead on YouTube, said that chicken feed has gone up so much that, based solely on feed cost, she would need to start charging $11.50 a dozen for eggs. A lot of people are not going to be selling their eggs any more.
Correct. There seems to be a good supply in the stores I go to right now, but the farmers are planting now for next year. Everyone needs at least a year supply, better yet a two-year supply, of groceries and everything else you might need.
Look up water glassing. Unwashed fresh eggs direct from the hens can be put in a bucket of solution and kept for 8 months or more. I might have to do that. I don't have any more room in my freezers.
Lol……chickens will kill rats, so do ghinnies; at least mine do. I also have cats that protect my birds. Sour Pus is an old barn cat I’ve had for years. She raises her litters in the barn around the birds and they protect them. Sour Pus and her daughters don’t let anything hurt the birds.
I've got a whole subdivision full of friendly stray cats...and several huge bags of cat food.
Now all I need is a Korean recipe book.

You can freeze fresh eggs. Take them out of the egg shell, place one egg per freezer bag. They are good for 6 months, frozen.

We lose about 30 a year to predation. Adding some game birds into the line this year, see if their flightiness helps.
My bards were super broody. Not a great trait for free-range yard birds.

12 hens, just started laying in December. Not too much trouble . I average 8 to 10 eggs a day.
My county doesn’t allow farm animals (defined as hooves animals or poultry). But if shtf we all know laws go out the window!
