Trusting most politicians or government officials has become a very silly thing to do.
My grandpa...born on 1909 always told me to never trust a politician so I think it's always been a silly thing to do.
My great grandpa, born in Norway in 1890, was part of the copper miner/union wars in the Keewenaw Peninsula in Michigans UP. His father was hit in the head with a hammer by a government agent and died a few weeks later. He would say the same things to me. He didnt trust government workers or politicians and spoke about them as if they were the workers slavemasters. His experiences in France during WW1 and the crash of 1929 also colored his perceptions of any big business or government. He was one self-sufficient SoB. A true outdoorsman, living off the land as much as possible.

Yup pretty much. Right down to taking Pasties to the mines for lunch. In my minds eye you couldnt tell him and Fred Bear or Paul Bunyan apart.
Wish I had a pastie right now,one more month,and I'll be home in the UP for a visit. We still have a 40 in the western UP,I go back a couple times every summer. Never thought I would end up in the big city wear you can't even see the night sky.
I know right. Kids down here in SE Michigan think there are 20 stars in the sky and have never seen the Milky Way in its glory. Up there the sky is completely filled with stars.
I went to undergrad at Michigan Tech. My grandpa grew up in Copper Harbor and my family still owns land outside Eagle River, a lot in Negaunee and a cabin in Big Bay right down the street from where the real life "Anatomy of a Murder" took place and where the movie was filmed. Once every couple winters me and some buds go to the Big Bay cabin and snowmobile through the Hurons and Keewenaw all the way to Eagle River and then back. The other winter we go the opposite way down the AAA to Marquette and then east to Paradise.
We had a buddy get lost in a snowstorm at night only to find an old hunting cabin on the route and stay the night there. Probably saved some toes at the least.
My bucket list includes a trip to Isle Royale. Alas the wolves are gone (last I heard there was only 1 female left on the island) and the longest study ever of wolf/moose, predator/prey dynamics, run by Tech, is over and the island is being over run by Moose.
I've been to the island,several times,my dad had a 36ft Chris craft he kept in Hancock in the 80s. Their are plenty of wolves running around in the western UP I've seen them on our own property. You can see an old steamer wreck on the approach to Washington harbor. You can see the bow,it's about 5 ft. Underwater and the rest of the ship fades away. Really cool.
A politician is supposed to be a civil servant, and all legal citizens can be politicians. It used to be a respectable position until it became a lifelong occupation and "the Government" became an acceptable den of thieves, blackmail-comprised pedos and/or satan-possessed entities instead of respectable civil servants working for their communities.
