This appears to be the Great Seal which was adopted in 1782 as we had no President in 1776:

I thought the 3 added stars on the bottom is a bigger difference than a differently shaped shield.

Was thinking same- what do they represent? Stars have represented #states in the past. The first thing I thought of was some new structure of what the US is... what defines a state in this new USA? Could they be countries which are now part of our compose the new USA?

Maybe they are using an old seal so as not to infringe on the "current" administration? I'm not familiar with the laws surrounding the use of the seal.

Why would the 1776 seal have 50 stars? The last 2 states, Hawaii and Alaska, weren't added as states until the 1950s.
Perhaps, to avoid confusion, frame Trumps choice of presidential seal as being based on Americas first, post 1776, presidential seal rather than the one currently in use.
Using this framing, helps focus attention on what Trump is trying to communicate. What changes did he make and why?
I'm not referring to Trump's choice of seal. I'm referring to the claim that the 1776 seal shown there is the actual 1776 seal. The seal the OP claims is the 1776 seal, has 5 rows of 10 stars each, 50 stars. That cannot be the 1776 seal because we didn't have 50 state ls at that point.
