Ehh, I don't like the willfully obtuse statements in response to this. They're talking about wind powering the electronics, which a normal sailboat wouldn't.
Still stupid. Though, a potentially interesting emergency technology. Too bad it probably has terrible efficiency that has already reached its upper limits
No they are literally talking about giant sails, not once in there does it mention how these sails will be powered, lowered raised, and in the concept they are showing the masts folding down too.
I suspect the huge rigid sails will use clean electricity to manipulate them. The clean quiet electricity can work day or night, rain or shine since it is produced below deck by diesel generators.
That's what I thought at first too. But then I went and found the full article, and then I checked their website. This was the first concept with giant 360 degree rotating sails. Now if you go onto the website I linked it explains everything about the ship in question. I'll link it here for you too.
It's an interesting tech. Omni directional turbines can shave about fifteen percent of the fuel on a trip. No way wind is replacing combustion engines, but it can assist.
Wouldn't that be a sailboat?
how dare you
Yeah in my day we called those sails.
I just patented the oar. I'm gonna be rich!
Not if my friend in the patent office 'loses' yours and approves mine! Bwahahaha.
Progress!
Racism!
You've stolen our dreams!
"how very dare you, blah blah blah" spoken with a little scrunched up face and slight accent.
Catherine Tate! One of the best comedians around if you like British comedy.
She was very funny.
They better hurry and patent that technology before somebody else does.
Years ago when I was young, I invented the wheel...long before I learned it had already been invented. Ya think I get any credit?
You can imagine how pissed I am that I didn't patent fire when I invented it.
Yes but nowhere near the fool I was after big Wheat stole my pre-sliced sandwich bread concept.
Give it a go. They patented coronavirus...and got nasty richer
You bigot
Beat me to it. Kek.
Not at all, it would be a breeze boat.
Maybe they remember it as a schooner.🤣
You said it, not me.
I know a schooner's a sailboat, it's a joke. Tough crowd, I guess. :)
That's what I am thinking too. Haha.

Well got dang I stand corrected. That's highly amusing and they actually do ONLY talk about the element of movement, not even anything else at all.
You gave them too much credit! KEK

The picture isn’t sails though, those are giant smoke stacks or steam

There's also a short video on the site, showing a 3D representation of the current working concept.
I kind of figured that. But we still need to have fun.
Nope I was straight up wrong and gave credit where it absolutely wasn't due

It's pretty ugly though.
Form matters too, dammit! How the FUCK would that get under bridges like a lot of trade routes require
And most sailboats have wind powered generators.
Gee didn’t this work 150 years ago? https://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2013/11/08/photo-worlds-oldest-active-ship-turns-150-years/
Thank you - was about to post EXACTLY THAT - what idiots smh
Or just how ships used to get across the Atlantic...
Yeah but the sails are solid man, solid!
