After pointing out how ridiculous it is that an unarmed flashmob would overthrow the most powerful nation in history, one response I received was "Being bad at it doesn't excuse an attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power, [formerly] a cornerstone of American democracy."
My response: Oh so now "It's not that it wasn't an insurrection, they were just bad at it." But didn't y'all go on & on for months about how fragile our Democracy is? Isn't J6 a dark day when "We almost lost our country"? And now it's, "Meh, they were just bad at it." Get your story straight.
I also don't accept their argument that 13 people had guns, but I went along with it to prove the theory is still absurd.
First I've ever heard this claim, I only know of one guy getting caught with a gun at J6 and he turned out to be a Fed.
Fake news articles saying secret service claimed they saw people with guns. I told them "Ok, 1000's of phone cameras but no video of guns or threats of using guns despite police beating & gassing people." They insisted the claims mattered, so I went with it because attacking their insurrection argument mattered more.
Yeah, you have to pick your battles when debating NPCs. When they smell you getting close to a point they don't want made, they'll try and make the debate about something else.

It's not really the best argument, but it amuses me: If the MAGA crowd had planned an insurrection, you'd know because they would either still hold the capitol or it would be razed in an attempt to remove them.

I'm not aware of one arrest for firearms on or before J6 and I lived in DC at that time and have friends both on MPD and on Federal police forces. They arrested PB Tarrio coming out of DCA for carrying empty handgun magazines. That's all I recall.
Good approach. I always ask who benefitted from the procedings being interrupted just as AZ was contested. Didn't the riot stop the Election Act of 1899 provision, that would have allowed 2 hours debate per contested state as long as one Senator and one House member contested? Trump ralliers weren't even there, yet. As a result of the riot, Congress voted without allowing any more states to be contested.
Then, to prove further that the dems are the ones who needed to prevent the procedings that day, look at the bill they tried to pass in July, which failed. It got snuck into the omnibus bill and passed that way. They changed the law so that a full 1/3 of the Senators and the House have to contest the election.
So, who was it that wanted to stop the states from being contested?
We conservatives did NOT want that procedure to be interrupted!
Why do no conservative politicians talk about this?!

l pose the question of who benefited from completely shutting down the debate and discussion.
I remind them that several Congress members were set to object and discuss circumstances of election anomalies.
I remind them that the originally stated goals of the protest — to force the media to cover the debate around the election anomalies that the media was ignoring and gaslighting about up until then — was completely dropped as soon as Congress members were told of the “breach”, and that the alleged breach happened because these protesters were allowed and even escorted in.
I ask them what they think about the large groups of protesters screaming at the people breaking windows to stop, and calling them Antifa (they’ve likely not even seen this video).
Basically, I ask questions to seed doubts, and it’s been effective.
(Although I’m going to be citing the Election Act of 1899 specifically now, thank you!)
I wish the law they snuck into the omnibus bill could be undone. It will be difficult to get 1/3 of Congress to contest a stolen state.
