There's an awful lot of LARPing happening on social media that's behind this surge, I think. Guys slapping on some lipstick and a wig, taking a selfie for their Twitter account and claiming to be "trans" but never doing any more than that. Going out and actually living as a woman is not the point - the point is for unwashed losers to suddenly be "popular" and put themselves beyond criticism.
It puts them beyond criticism while at the same time giving them a free pass to criticize and attack other people - especially women. It certainly doesn't help that there's a significant number of "feminists" who clap like trained seals for these guys.

Then they dye their hair, find more acceptance, change their gender to "X", find more acceptance, and the dance goes on. They aren't really "gender confused". The true gender confused are a percent of a percent, however the other 99.9% are brainwashed heterosexuals.

And because I don't follow how ad revenue etc works on social/online media, I'll just guess that there's probably another entire cash grab from online outrage about this as well.
