Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
(Unofficial) Question of the Day:
Inspired by u/polish_snausage s post here today, and not as well thought out, or official as u/rooftoptendie s daily Qs, just off the cuff:
How do you "wake up" in the morning? I don't mean so much routine, etc, though that could be an interesting write up if you feel like it, but moreso your "mood".
For instance both my son and I wake up and are usually completely grumpy and out of it for a bit before we get our wits about us. I usually stumble to the coffee pot, grumbling and grunting at anything that gets in my way. I'm usually so out of it I try to completely avoid contact with others (and they, me) because I know there's a good chance I'll be a jerk. And I'm not really a coffee or caffeine addict - I usually only get about a half a mug drank before Im "awake" and move on, then don't have any more the rest of the day. I just need my "sit alone for 15 minutes" or I'm a beast.
My wife typically wakes up like an explosion of positive energy, ready to go. Which I envy so much, and can further complicate matters. 😅
I usually get up at 5, sometimes earlier. I have a cup of sugar free gator to wash down the Aleve and then start my coffee. Let my dog out, enjoy my cup of coffee and then go for a long walk with doggo and then get showered etc. I don’t like talking or anything until about 8am. The early morning is my fav time of day. Birds waking up, sunrise, the donkey hee-hawing in the distance (lmao) and prayer inviting the beautiful day to begin. I just don’t feel like talking but not a grump.
Wow this was beautiful. Something about the early morning is so special. It's like there is a feeling of endless possibilities and potential ahead.
Exactly. You summed it up.
First of all, I sleep a little less than I should which makes me fall alseep as soon as I go to bed.
Then I use a "dawn simulator": it's a device which progressively produces light over half an hour, this can be perceived during my sleep and my eyes will inform my brain that it's time to wake up. At H hour, my iPad plays the "Slow Rise" alarm from the bathroom which gently informs me that it's time. Then I drink a large glass of cold water and begin my work day sipping a few mugs of coffee.
Issue: My wife uses "Slow rise" as a phone ringtone, so when I hear it, a Pavlovian reflex makes me feel sleepy. 🥱
I always learn something from you...never heard of a "dawn simulator"...interesting...you seem very disciplined in your approach to life ...and it appears that you are very productive so I guess this is what works for you...more power to you...☺️
I take a puff of last night's cigarette still smoldering in it's tray, down a little something then be on my way.
I am clear as a bell in the morning, rarely wake up groggy, if I have had a lousy nights sleep, I am still wide awake, but slightly deranged feeling sorry for myself and prone to tears or tantrums. Luckily since I have been taking 2 magnesium gummies at night, I do get good sleep. I have dogs that need to go out to pee in the morning, in winter I have to get wood in the stove before the red coals go cold, so I start the day "running"
I like quiet and coffee, but not a bear.
Wondering - do you by chance have sleep apnea 335K? That can account for waking up "out of it".
