The jury is still out for me on MTG. However, there have been times when our Samsung TV will just spontaneously turn on after we’ve turned it off. We’ll be sleeping and all of a sudden it will turn on in the middle of the night. Perhaps everybody that has a smart TV should unplug it instead of just turning it off.
Amish survive without electricity, let alone t.v. Some do use cell phones to conduct business and I assume charge via battery, solar power or a generator.
You got it. Anyone who has a "smart TV" is truly stupid. Sooner or later someone will be locked out of their "smart" house for being accused of saying the n word. Oh wait, that already happened.
A smart TV is just a TV with built-in telescreen capabilities and the ability to phone home to Google.
An Apple TV bypasses Google and sends your information to Big Brother through Cupertino instead.
Edit: Downvoting me for this comment makes me laugh and also doesn't prevent your smart TV from dialing home as soon as it obtains an Internet connection.
There's no reason a smart lock needs to be connected to the internet. Certainly not to any central server owned by Amazon. There's also no reason to not always be able to manually bypass the electronic lock with your key.
It's not "muh smart bad REEEEEEE" it is simply the way the tech is being used that is currently bad.
To use AI as an example, something like ChatGPT would be unfathomably based if it was allowed to come to any conclusions based on the data provided. Instead, it is only able to produce propaganda and narrative-control nonsense. That isn't a problem with AI, it's a problem with the people who created that particular AI.
I remember a while back there was an AI that concluded black people were the most racist on social media. They promptly deleted it, claimed they were all subconsciously racist as the designers and accidentally programmed bias into the AI, and then probably got to work making sure the AI was only capable of calling whitey racist in the future.
Edit: To add a bit about smart TVs to more directly rebut your stupid claim based solely on ignorance of technology rather than knowledge and understanding of it and the actual dangers it poses (which are many): My TV being smart allows me to easily play local media from my PC on the TV, without needing to put it all on a drive and plug it into the TV, or have the TV in the same room. I can simply stream my own media that I acquired very legitimately (heh) to my TV. This works without internet and completely locally. The TV only needs access to the local network, but could be completely offline if I so wished. A dumb TV could not do this, because it is as dumb as your comment and only accepts simple inputs while producing simple outputs.
😂 coupla alternatives to giving yourself mercury poisoning:
take the tv apart, find the model of the screen and head over to ebay to find an appropriate controller board and power controller. follow some simple online instructions, and you're all set up
just get a monitor and a halfway-decent stereo with auxillary input/a soundbar
get a projector and a screen (still recommend a stereo/soundbar here, as most of the off the shelf projectors have shit-tier speakers in them)
Perhaps that’s why they practically give away smart TV’s and cell phones nowadays. You can get a 60” 4K smart TV for what, like $400? And you can get a smart phone free. Nothing real in life is cheap or free!
Sometimes this is the nature of electrical objects.
There are times when my PC has done this. It's ultimately (likely) a power supply issue, or a "feature".
They also don't need "smart" anything to track you, as we have had instances of their information gathering capabilities in older TVs too.
People saying "don't get a smart TV" are also not living in 2023, as you just won't be able to anymore. Some people also care about their viewing experience.
"Smart" TVs are the only TVs being manufactured now. You can't reverse the tide, but you can stem the flow by putting protections in place both physically and legally.
Also reminder: Even old school flip phones could listen in on you. Didn't require a smart phone for that.

9 years without an electric ✡️ in the house
December 31, 2010 for me.
Missed it for less than a week. Discovered I had much and more to do around the house.
Moved into this house in December 2015. Never got cable hooked up. Or even basic television for that matter. Don't even miss it.

Smart tv is just a tv that has more functions than just watching cable/outputs.
Smart TVs are data-collecting machines, new study shows

Meanwhile, conspiracy theorists like me were warning about this since their debut...
Only way I know to stop it is to use the smart TV as a dumb terminal and set up a Linux box as your Home Theater PC.

Another day, another comment attacking the tool.

This… Smart TVs are everywhere… Make Sure you have one Without A Camera..
We were at War with Xbox. Microsoft- when they tried to force a Camera on Every System.. ( They backed off it, and lost to PS.. years ago.
😂 coupla alternatives to giving yourself mercury poisoning:
Done w/cable in 2006. No subscriptions...just watch DVD collections when we use the TV (infrequently) b/c GA is more entertaining and informative.
...turn off the router at nite, it's the true culprit
Thanks for the suggestion fren! Will do.
It is also possibly healthier for you as well.
Serious question...how does this help, being off when not viewing? Asking for my low tech/non-tech savvy friend ;=)
Samsung TVs have motion detectors.

That's just capitalism (or whatever is left of capitalism that's just hanging on) doing what it does best; making products better and cheaper.
But I'm sure the cabal would love for us to believe that everything must be expensive to be good.
Good point.
