As someone whose family are swimmers judging from his strokes he looks like he’s safe enough to make it out of a calm pond.
Either he fell off and hit himself with the board, was on something that caused him to not be as alert, or someone took him out. There needs to be an autopsy but I bet there won’t be one.
It was his out. He sang and I'm guessing was offered a new life elsewhere witness protection of sorts. Dhunt for red October, new life in the mountain west?
I wouldn't characterize that video as "strong swimming ability". Obviously he could swim, and if the media is straight lying about him being able to swim at all, that might be a red herring.
Treat water with respect, it can very quickly become very dangerous. Children can drown in an inch of water. There was a USA swimmer who died in an open water race over a decade ago now, Fran Crippen. His body was found 500 yards from shore in a 10k race.

I just got back from Kauai. I would swim in the ocean 3 to 4 days a week. I’m a great swimmer, and I can swim for at least an hour out there, and I get exhausted after that.
I’ve seen so many people stand on the shore, who are afraid to get into the water because they can’t swim or even if they can’t swim, they don’t want to be swept away by a current or a riptide.
Maybe he refused to cook hot dogs.
Maybe he used to cook them all the time but had too much to say about it.

it's a quote from the State Police statement.
They are not claiming he couldn't swim. And this is a police statement which often are unusually formal. This is just what a witness observed.
The twitter poster then makes this massive jump to a conclusion.
“Appeared to briefly struggle and did not resurface.” - this would indicate he could not swim and was unable to stay afloat.
No it doesn't. There's lot of other things that could have happened here as you point out.
