they still hear you...
and by now they probably
have a sensor in the screen
that senses your image even
when seemingly shut down...

You can turn that feature off (on Android at least) - it gets bright to do facial recognition to unlock your phone. it's one of the first things I turned off.
Didn't the FBI even say to do this years ago? Due to hackers (and school staff activating these in kids bedrooms)?
Electrical tape all around. I'd even put it on the front facing cameras on my phone/tablets. Unless you have kids and grandkids and do facetime or whatever. See, you let your guard down and now the govm't owns you. FML.
Hardware slides are still a loose standard, but fortunately many laptops (and actual webcams, but those are easier to deal with) are including those.
Also, hardware switches that physically sever the connections of the microphone are the best as well, not that you have the ability to do this on phones or laptops.
It only takes 1 video conference with somebody in their pajamas to learn--- post its and black tape adorned all my coworkers cameras afyer thatvq meeting...LOL

That's like saying you're paranoid because you lock your doors at night. But I hear you. I'm too old and mainly just too stubborn to run, so when they come lead will be flying and hot brass will be piling up at my feet. They'll get me but I'll be carrying a few of them to the other side with me as my honor guard.
I've been putting a piece of electrical tape over the lens on my laptops ever since they started putting cameras in them.
Just bought a new desktop(all in one) and it comes with a small slide that goes over the camera. I thought, well, it took them long enough.

Too many techtubers do the teardown of these sorts of things; they literally wouldn't be able to implement that.
Hiding inaccessible code that could, say, activate microphones or cameras would be much easier.
They don’t need the camera. They can just use the WIFI to know where you are in your home, what you are doing, etc.
Just like the massive security flaws in electronic voting machines were revealed by hackers a decade ago, so dems are unable to use them to cheat.
My phone flashes a full brightness screen when I wake it - I think to photograph me, now I turn it away to switch on.

As nickdallaslight says, it's a feature to allow the front camera to do facial biometrics in a dark environment.
You can turn it off.

Same after a new laptop camera light periodically turned itself on with no aps running.
