Yes, in AZ at least. I do know here, especially in construction, there are many illegals who purchase SS numbers (using the same number too!) and use made up names to bypass the laws.
I used to own a business. We had to fill out an i9 on every employee and make copies of their 2 forms of ID proving they were a citizen. I had to keep them on file in case I was checked. I’m in Tennessee.
I’m old enough to remember when hiring illegals was considered unpatriotic, the public was angry about it and it was a black mark on your business. Smh…
Every employer has to fill out an I-9 form for new employees. New employees have to provide evidence of 1) Identity and 2) the legal right to work in the USA. Employees can provide any of the types of ID listed for each category, and there are many on that list, but the employer cannot require specific IDs.
This company asked for specific IDs in violation of the law, which is why they're agreeing to pay a fine.
I DO hope they get their money back with interest and have the pleasure of seeing the DoJ hoodlums put into prison for this...this is OUTRIGHT EXTORTION!!!
Wonder if these companies were hit with an I-9 audit in the past.
From January 2020 to August 2022, these Chattanooga, Tennessee-based companies were found to have routinely asked lawful permanent residents to provide their green cards, while also demanding that non-U.S. citizens present various immigration-related documents, according to the DOJ.
This behavior is in violation of Biden's anti-discrimination clause of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This provision forbids employers from requesting specific or additional documents based on an employee's citizenship, immigration status, or national origin.
How do I know if someone is authorized to work in the US?
The employer has a legal duty to verify that each employee working for him is authorized to work in the US. This is the duty of the employer, not the employee. The employer is obligated to verify the employee's authorization to work by taking a copy of certain documents. They are recorded on USCIS form I-9, which is discussed below.
What is an I-9?
An I-9 is a government form that is issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) / United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The form can be found here: USCIS I-9 Form.
Form I-9 is not filed with the Government. There is no filing fee for it. However, the employer must fill it out and keep a copy, along with a copy of the documents that it used to verify the employee's identity and their right to work in the US. The USCIS has put forth a list of acceptable documents. It can be 1 copy of any document listed in "List A" or 1 copy of a document from List B (establishing identity) and from List C (establishing the right to work):
Common List A documents include: a US passport, a green card, or an employment authorization (EAD) card.
Common List B documents include: a US state driver's license or state ID or a school ID
Common List C documents include: a US birth certificate or Social Security Card with no restriction.
What is an I-9 Audit?
An I-9 audit is just what it sounds like: an audit by the Government to verify that an employer has correctly verified the right of its workers to legally work in the US. I-9 audits are conducted by the Immigrations & Custom Enforcement agency (ICE).
Under the Obama Administration, I-9 audits have increased dramatically. They have risen from 500 audits to over 2500 in the first term of the Obama administration. I-9 audits can result in fines from $110.00 - $1100.00 per violation. As such, they are a good source of revenue for the government and the Obama administration is targeting businesses to get that revenue.
If they don't need green cards to work, why give out green cards? There must be a code saying that foreigners must be pre-approved to have jobs here. If that isn't being enforced, the government isn't doing its job.
And the name is Covenant Trucking. Wasn’t the Christian school that had the tragedy also named Covenant. Some reason they don’t like the word Covenant.
Isn’t that what they are supposed to do?

Still that way. This will be squashed. White hats in control.
And then the clowns pushing this witch hunt should be charged with skirting federal law, tried and convicted and punished.
Then ridiculed for eternity. Never being at peace to walk down a street. Ever.
E verify today
Yup, I9s. Governme t required it. No fining them for it.
Exactly!!! So the Feds have dropped this law?
I’m old enough to remember when hiring illegals was considered unpatriotic, the public was angry about it and it was a black mark on your business. Smh…
Unpatriotic yes .. but I remember when it was illegal lol
Yes, that’s what I meant but somehow didn’t put it in the comment. Ugh…tired brain.
faith based trucking company
Well, that explains it.
Of course they did. Hid the robbing of jobs from Americans,
Details matter

The precautions they were taking could be because they were hit with an I-9 audit in the past.
Could be, but that's illegal. The employer has to accept any document from the list, the employer cannot ask for specific documents.
Supreme Court should have something to say about that…hope they didn’t waive that option…🤔
Tell me why I had to show my driver’s license and birth certificate/passport in 2017 when hired as a nurse then! Give JRB a good, swift kick.
Bidenomics

This will never hold up, easily challenged. A business must prove their workers are legal.
