I traded in all my inherited stock for gold coins and junk silver coins. My hubby was not happy with me that I did that when Obama was in office but he's happy now to know we at least have a back up for when the SHTF And if we don't need it during our lifetime we are passing it on to our only child to use if she ever needs it herself
When kennedy half dollars came out you could only get two at the banks (cause hoarding)...my grandfather drove all over philadelphia going to every bank. I have all those coins today
You have to be careful today when buying 1964 and pre Kennedy half-dollars. The Chinese have been counterfeiting them, but there's an easy way to tell. If a half-dollar has an "S" mint mark on the obverse, no such mint mark was ever made in those half-dollars, they're fake. I think (if I remember correctly) that the authentic half-dollars have double letter mint marks...something like FB and GB, but I'd have to look it up to be sure.
Just avoid ANY pre-'64 Kennedy half-dollars that have an "S" mint mark, they are FAKE!!
My grandfather bought them IN 64 from the bank
Very good, long before the Chinese scammers even thought about counterfeiting them. I just bought 5 of them at a gun show recently, for $10 each.
Yeah that's probably a good call. What kind of coins did you get?
I got a roll of uncirculated French Gold Francs with angels on them. In 2009 I paid $324.44 a piece (probably more than I should have paid for them, but I wasn't sure where to buy them at the time bc I didn't trust local dealers in NY) I bought them at Goldline The same ones reportedly that Napolean carried in his pocket.
Cool! I have two Francs with Napoleon III on them. Still looking out for a good deal on a Napoleon I coin.
Im not at all savvy in coin collecting I bought these at the time bc I liked them.
Nickels have more value than 5 cents.
FYI
When I go to a store with "self checkout" machines I load them up with all the change I have collected regardless of the total. The machine will then give me all new coins to search through for keepers.
In the last month I have received three nickles (1964, 1964, 1953) and one Mercury dime (1943).
It's like playing the lottery, but you don't lose.
You can go to the bank and trade cash for coin rolls.
One time I traded a hundred dollar bill for 10 half dollar roles. That's 200 coins in total.
Out of that I got 15 silver Kennedys and 4 Franklin halves. That would have cost over $100 by itself at a coin shop or on eBay. I just rolled up the non-silver stuff and traded it back for cash.
You are correct. They are 75% copper by the way. You can follow the melt value of coinage by going here. https://www.coinflation.com/ Silver too.
I’m hoarding Bitcoins as well. The best performing asset of the last 10 years and an important asset for the future. BTC Etf approval is around the corner and the halving in April will see the price go up a lot in this next year
And if the entire monetary system collapses, they can be used to make buttons and washers.
If the entire monetary system collapses, silver coins will STILL retain value for their silver content, not as legal tender.
Nickles and old copper pennies too. Depending on copper prices.
Or pounded out to make arrow heads??
