Pretty nice summary of the problems with EVs in the story. A snippet:

The key issues with EVs are as follows.

The cost upfront is much higher.

Financing charges are higher.

They depreciate at a higher rate than internal combustion cars.

The insurance is more expensive, by at least 25 percent.

Repairs are much more expensive, if you can get them done at all, and take longer.

Tires are more expensive and don’t last as long because the car is so heavy.

Refueling is not easy and missteps here can have nightmarish consequences.

They are more likely to catch fire.

Any motor vehicle accident that impacts the battery can lead to repairs higher than the value of the car, that is totaled with so much as a scratch.

To top it all over, there is no longer any financial advantage to the driver. It now costs slightly more to charge under many conditions than to refuel with gasoline.

The novelty of driving one for a day wears off after the first day. At first they seem like the greatest thing that ever happened, like an iPhone with wheels. That’s great but then the problems crop up and people start to realize that they are fine for urban commutes with home chargers and not much else.

They make truly terrible rentals. Obviously, under rental conditions, people have to use charging stations rather than a charger in the garage. That means spending part of your vacation figuring out where to find one.

Not all are superchargers, and if it is a regular charger, you are looking at an overnight wait. If you do find a station with fast chargers, you might have to wait in line. They might not work. You waste hours doing this. And you likely have to reroute your trip even to find a station without any certainty that you will get a spot with a functioning charger.

No one wants to do this. When you rent a car, all you want is a car that goes the distance. And typically car rentals are for going some distance else you would just take a taxi or a Lyft from the airport. You might need to drive several hours. And god forbid that this takes place in cold weather because that can reduce your mileage by half. Your whole trip will be ruined.

Why in the world would anyone want to rent one of these things rather than a gas-powered car? You might be better off with a horse and carriage.

Did Hertz think of any of this before they spent $250M on a fleet? Nope. They were just doing the fashionable thing.

I think they thought of all that has happened and did it anyway because...

...and all will do as told - doesn't only apply to politicians.

That was the reason I did not purchase one. If I run out of charge, there's a long wait before I can go somewhere. The forest area of the Pacific NW don't have charging stations and you are stuck.

Hertz drank the kool-aid. LOL

They were always doomed to fail as they could only ever serve as short distance transport within a city, And because cars within cities was already a stupid idea to begin with, all the problems that came with that won't be solved by making all the cars bigger, heavier and a lot more prone to spontaneously explode.

This was always the plan. Everything climate will collapse in on itself because it’s fake science. It’s all a lie. We’re forced to switch. Then the tech fails and humanity circles the drain. Just like the mRNA failures.

Civilization is built on lies and its imploding.

One last attempt of grift before the inevitable switch to mass transit and bicycles happens in the cities. The modes of transport they can't tax or practice usury on your wallet while you use them.

Or I could be wrong, and we'll see something even more stupid in terms of expensive pod based transportation, which you pay a lot for but don't actually own and can't be repaired. 🤡🌎

Hyperloop and the Vegas loop already failed, and now those tunnels are worthless because they're too small and too curvy to fit a train in them.

Or we have to Jack into a digital world to go to work.

There are people making plans for our life and we have zero say. It’s awful. These tech asshats have made this planet miserable.

It's hard to stop people from walking cycling. Unless... they use medicine and poison our food to make everyone fat, tired and miserable, that way I can see how a lot of people would prefer to work from home and never go outside, they'll be too sick.

And then in a few decades when AI is perfected in all these areas, all these useless eaters can die alone in their pods.

A very dark future indeed. Eat red meat and fruit, take water from your own well, avoid all kinds of slop and make sure to exercise every day. No need to dress up like a fag in spandex with logos of multinational corporations, just take a walk, a hike or ride a bicycle out to nearest forest, beach or mountain range. Enjoy the nature and the fresh air.

I have four older vehicles which I regularly maintain…they all work great and each has a specific usage. I also have no car notes. Trust me…it’s much better to have a dependable older vehicle and pay to have it fixed when something goes wrong than a payment each month.

You guys hate EV's which I can understand. But look at how fun the tech is in the ebike, and e-dirtbike realm. Ripping these silent high powered ebikes on the roadside is quite fun. And best part! No registration and insurance needed.

I have yet to see evidence of anyone here "hating" EVs, that's a total straw man argument fallacy. The scams, grifting, tyranny, theft, etc involved, that all is what's being hated on. No one cares if someone wants to buy a ridiculously expensive city car.

Now the massive amounts of batteries perturb abolitionists like me, because the actual slavery involved in mining the battery metals is abhorrent and evil. Algae-produced, renewable petroleum is great with me.

Agreed. They just want freedom to continue to choose without policies/laws eroding/eradicating those choices. The Elites deciding all this stuff tend to forget that we all can’t afford their Elitist choices and policies because they are the ones hoarding up all the money.

And meanwhile in China where they have gone all in on ebikes, an average of 8 per day are spontaneously catching fire, sometimes while the rider is on the bike, sometimes while charging, sometimes while parked and NOT charging. And since they are often parked with other ebikes in outdoor parking areas or indoor parking garages or hallways or apartments, they often burn down dozens or hundreds of other vehicles, or even burn down entire buildings. It is incredibly difficult to put out the fires, and requires special equipment only a fire department has. Even then they often can't put the fire out and have to let it burn itself out.

Enjoy ripping your silent high powered ebike on the roadside, I hope it doesn't blow up while you're sitting on it.

I am not saying its gonna save humanity, or the climate. I am saying they are fun as hell :D:D:D. And hella quiet motors for rippin around suburbs w/o noise complaining karens. Great for hunting also, quiet enough to get near game animals, and powerful enough to help with transport of the meat.

However I do understand the Chyna LiPo batteries are having major issues right now, and causing hella fires.

Yea the battery costs/replacement for cars is insane. But for electric dirtbikes and bikes it is much much easier. Alot of ebikes going up are not having UL listed batteries also. So basically un-regulated batteries with questionable building practices/components

B4 I will purchase a vehicle running on battery, I first want to see a lawn mower running on battery that's worth my time and money first. That will be my determination there.

The mowers, iiirc are using lead acid batteries. Which makes them a bit much inefficient. LiPo are very efficient and powerful discharge. Which makes them an amazing choice for power/small ev's. But makes them also a powder keg because those are the batteries you see on propaganda central, burning houses down...aka the news
