Actually it wouldn't have to be word of mouth.
It would be no different than when I go to a store. I don't usually just wander around I go get what I want and leave. On the internet you can just go get about anything you want and leave.
The difference is you don't have to sort through a ton of shit you don't want.
Yes.. but that store still has to run ads to get people to the store.
No business can stay in business without ads, leads and sales followup.
If you go through shit that you don't want. That's mostly because they don't know anything about you.
So they are using some generic randomization logic to show you something. If you do not click like or dislike.
They will just show you more random crap.
This is why I tell them. Do not show me this. I want you to show me this.
I block all ads, on all platforms. I don't watch TV. I don't listen to radio.
Yet I seem to be just fine finding and buying products I want. Unless it's some brand new technology, I know what exists.. in which case that would be news, and I'd find out that way.
My point is simple.
If you can go to a company and tell them.
"Hey... I know a way that you can get new leads and customers without spending a dime on ads".
You would be one of the richest people in the world.
I will pay for that information.
I'm in no way disagreeing with you that ads make businesses money and are important to them. But you keep arguing about how great and necessary they are from a user perspective when that's just not true.
In other words, yes, a parasite needs a host, but in no way does a host need a parasite.
