What’s everyones’ opinion on the Tesla Optimus that Elon is talking about rolling out millions of per year at $20-30k per?

Between these and AI, what in the world is the world going to look like in 2 years?
Hard no.
Not so much on whether anyone is intending to buy any of these or not.
Just what might be coming. The world looks like it’s about to become very, very different, one way or the other.
Just because you “can” doesn’t mean you “should” build these robo critters. Same with clones. They will eventually replace us humans.
I could see them being a godsend for people with disabilities.
I don’t necessarily disagree, yet here we are. Automation is also a wholly distinct class of morality than clones, which are supposed to be illegal to make, in theory.
Technophobia has destroyed more than a few businesses and countries.
Anyone can be a universal pessimist on these things. How could we push an optimistic front forward?
I think one thing that needs careful vigilance and attention is this recent push to "give robots rights"
What's next, you gonna be a cop killer if you napalm a robo dog that shot your organic k9 pet? 🤔
There needs to be serious oversight and regulations on AI and androids as they relate to humanity and "status".

The “robot rights” actually would make some sense. If they’re going to be able to analyze things and “think”, we wouldn’t want them to be able to come to the “Skynet conclusion” by maltreatment from the start just because we can and they’re inanimate objects.
A dog, also endowed with the ability to learn and respond to stimuli, may eventually turn on its owner in the presence of abuse. Add logic and access to information and likely networking into that mix, and caution as to how we limit and proact ourselves in engaging with this … “new natural mode”? … would become a very good question. Will they end up reflecting back our righteousness or lack thereof on us?
There do need to be good limits set.
AI SciFi, I believe, has focused on the negatives of AI quite a bit. Both catching up to that and whatever positive trends may become available seems like a good idea.
Defected #90 was covering some of the aspects of the “nostalgic futurism” it looks like we might be headed into. Very interesting thoughts, and absolutely what prompted this post.

That's one of my favorite sayings... especially within the context of using robotic/digital fabrication equipment to do everything. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should...
"For your safety you will remain indoors." "My logic is undeniable"
Obviously there are and will be risks with these things. There were risks with planes, blimps, metallurgy, gunpowder, chemistry, and every other technology. “People don’t die from gunshots if there are no guns.”
The idea of robots and AI and self-automated-everything being everywhere isn’t necessarily pastoral and idyllic, BUT on the flip side, if we let bad actors run this show instead of looking at this with optimism, we very likely will end up with bad actors running the show on the exact script we feared.
365 x “Fear Not.”
The “we had no idea we were the last ones” meme is very real. Still, it looks like the bull of this future is coming. Do we take it by the horns or let someone else be the cowboy?
I had only seen these coming from places like Boston Dynamics and maybe Japan. Did not know that Musk was going to have genpop models.
Gen. 2: 7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. When they can do this, I will be impressed. Adam had all the coding in his DNA but only when God breathed into him the breath of life did he become a living being.
Amen
Domestic robots are, like it or not, long overdue technology-wise. As long as the software is open source and Cloud is optional, I actually am interested in it.
We need to rule the technology rather than allowing technology to rule us, and ultimately whether these robots are good for the society or not depends on the people using it and what they do with it.
I can imagine getting one of these to cook healthy meals for the family while we all have more time for us. Just that would make it well worth its $20-$30K price.
The ability to turn off cloud connectivity and data submission to an external target would be absolutely critical.
Would be really interesting for them to say, help with making wood cuts or lifting timbers, or stones, depending on how much physical strength they have.
Yep. I love the current generation LLMs because there are some very powerful models you can run on your own computer, and even at 70% ChatGPT, they are still very useful.
I am thinking the same with these Robots. Completely programmable locally, perhaps even with an interface to one of these local LLMs and let them take care of the heavier part of the daily life.
Would be so fantastic with our parents, for instance, to have them help them with lifting heavy stuff. Thats the biggest risk of them getting hurt right now.
Total fantasy...
As a mechatronic engineer of sorts, I'll tell you the reality is ... every task you want that thing to do requires you to program it to do that EXACT & SPECIFIC task.
You would have to guide this machine through EVERY kinematic motion - essentially, digitizing each movement so that the joint encoders et al record the position of EACH movement for EVERY task, at the appropriate level of acceleration, velocity and force.
Yes, fuzzy logic etc coupled with advanced machine vision can help this learning process, but don't be fooled... it's not as slick as you think it is just yet. It's got a long way to go.
Hate to go there, but I'm going to anyway because it's true reality...Pervs will notice first off it doesn't have a mouth opening... and that's what Joe six pack, already a non-contributing zero of society, will focus on as the only useful application of this technology. I like to call a rose a rose. "To deny our own impulses is to deny the very thing that makes us human" -Mouse
Cue Joe six pack's anthem: He likes books about war
Learning to deny our impulses should be a core feature of Christianity, but we’re currently off track.
We can, should, and must do better.
It may also be good for robots to be harder to train initially to keep “Joe Six Pack” from impulsing with them out of frustration.
Good stuff! These are the kinds of thoughts I was looking for.
Well...yanno...If God didn't want you to do it, He'd have put it in the middle of your back where you couldn't reach it. So there is that...lol
Why would you need one? To become fatter and lazier?
Has no one read Isaac Asimov?

I watch Dustups Ranch on gootube. This is a wonderful application for Optimus. They are trying to turn 320 acres of Texas desert into a forest. Terraforming is hard work and it can be pretty hot in the desert there. The robot won't need food, water, or waste disposal. Just solar power.
Things I would have My Optimus do: Grow food, pull weeds, cook meals, clean the house, babysit, build buildings out of stone or compressed earth blocks. There's going to be no jobs.
we can sit around and get fat.
I'll be drive my Ford ranger and Rouch mustang in 2 years i bet.
