Ironically part of the reason Canada is even a Country. Is the British had several fears. One of which being the Canadian Colonies deciding U.S statehood might be better economically. So they sought to tie them closer to the Empire. And nurture a nascent National Identity.
And two. Regarding the deepening relationship between the U.S and Tsarist Russia. Namely A Russian Empire with an Army equipped by American Industry and ships built in American Ports. The American-Russian feud that has more or less defined Foreign policy is about a century old. Maybe a bit less. And largely stems from WW1 and Woodrow Wilson. Before that both Countries had a seemingly strange affinity for each other. With both countries granting each other favorable trade privileges and diplomatic treatment.Despite all indications including our chosen forms of Government. Being seemingly opposites. Tsarist Russia at least on paper being an absolute monarchy. Versus a Constitutional Republic.
Also fun fact. Some indicators British Support for the Confederacy went far deeper than popular history would suggest. With Confederate Intelligence operating quite openly in Canada. And several cities including Montreal reportedly hotbeds of Confederate Sympathizers.
The First place Jefferson Davis went after being bailed out of prison by Cornelius Vanderbilt and several other Wealthy Men. Including two Republicans. One of whom was an avowed Abolitionist. At least publicly.

Regardless of what they have been saying the US does not pay Canada anything except for the lumber to build houses. If Trump puts a tariff on products then it will cost the US citizens a lot of money for houses more then they are paying now.
The US does not have enough lumber to cover all the citizens in your country thats why they buy it here.
We also have more freshwater lakes then all the countries in the world combined, which means in a water shortage which is already happening Canada is king. Which may be the reason Trumps throwing around Canada as the 51st state.
With Canadas massive resources the US would be unbeatable.
And no I am sick of people saying Canada is all liberals they are not. Half our country is conservative if an election were held today the conservatives would win in a landslide and Trudeau would be out on his ass.
Most Canadians do not want to give up the health care. No its not free we pay on our taxes thats why Canadas taxes are a little more than yours.
Canadians also dont want to give up our tax free lotteries, it doesnt matter how many millions you win lotteries are all tax free. So are bingos and scratch tickets and horse racing and casinos and anything else you can bet on. Its all tax free in Canada.
We have clean air and the cleanest water in the world the US water is all highly polluted.
The only thing Canadians would gain by becoming the US is making it easier to go to places like Florida. Not many Canadians want to go to California. It used to be such a beautiful state but the democrats are destroying it.

Canada is also too big to turn into 1 state it would have to be 13 states because we have 10 provinces and 3 territories.
We also have some stupid laws like women can go without a top as long as it is outside including beaches. Although you wont find many women doing that.
Don't forget the maple syrup. Oh, and Canucks discovered insulin and invented peanut butter (well, at least their claim is about as valid as anyone else's). And Niagara Falls supplies power to a huge swath of the U.S., and Canada could cut that off any time, if they really cared. Yes insulin was invented by a Canadian. Also our drugs are really cheap especially if you are a senior. My prescriptions no matter what they are only cost $6.
