Just a note, this is the price of convenience/laziness. There power comes from promising xx% yoy returns on managing your money. All you have to do is invest it ETFs/mutual funds. For most of the stocks people could just sell the funds and invest in equivalent stocks that they now own and manage, diminishing vanguard/blackrocks power.
The govt created this with 401K retirement plans. We work our asses off and then hand our 401K money to a brokerage firm who gets to hang onto it for years and years. We get a pittance for our investment. Do you think those brokerage firms are really looking out for your best interest? Of course not. They look out for themselves and we are sheep to be fleeced.
