What history will not tell you is Ho Chi Minh was on the Allied side during WW 2 and fought against the Japanese with Allies military. After the war ended, France decided it would colonize Vietnam----Ho came to the USA and asked for our help in removing the French from their land. The USA did not want to offend it's European ally De Gaulle so they turned Ho Chi Minh away and backed France's move to colonize Vietnam. This is when Ho went to the Chinese and Soviet Union and asked for help. The US actually drove Ho into communism and an adversary to the US. Pretty sure he felt like he was thrown under the bus when the war ended and he declared Vietnam's independence only to have his main supporter back the French!
South vietnam was colonized by France in the 1800's. Russia was also our allie in WWII. Ho was a long time communist. He sent a letter to Truman to take his side against France. We handed over eastern Europe and East Germany to the Soviet union. Cold War was just heating up.
Pre colony, pre communist Vietnam were mostly provences of china. Their languages were even different.
When Ho came to the US and was turned down, we missed a chance for a free Vietnam with US influence. Of course with the CIA/Mossad wanting a war it would have probably turned out the same!
He was a well known communist. Truman understood what Roosevelt and Churchill did at Yalta. The cold War was underway. The domino theory was a reality.
