China already owns the largest pork producer in the country, maybe other producers as well. I hope they aren't instructed to do something to the pork

Smithfield Foods is the largest pork producer in the United States and the world. Founded in 1936 in Smithfield, Virginia, the company is now a subsidiary of the Chinese multinational conglomerate WH Group.

Here are some key facts about Smithfield Foods:

Production Volume: Smithfield processes approximately 27 million hogs annually. Market Share: The company controls an estimated 27% of the U.S. pork market. Operations: Smithfield owns over 500 farms in the U.S. and contracts with another 2,000 independent farms nationwide. It also has facilities in Mexico and Europe.   Brands: Smithfield sells pork products under various brand names, including Eckrich, Farmland Foods, John Morrell, and Nathan's Famous.   Global Reach: Smithfield exports meat to 40 countries and has around 4,600 customers globally. Sow Inventory: In 2022, Smithfield reported having 1,113,500 sows. While Smithfield is the largest, other significant pork producers in the U.S. include:

Tyson Foods: While primarily known for chicken and beef, Tyson is the second-largest pork producer in the U.S., processing around 10 million hogs per year. In fiscal year 2024, pork accounted for $5.83 billion of Tyson's sales. They operate six pork packing facilities with a weekly slaughter capacity of 421,000 head.   JBS USA: This company processes approximately 20 million hogs annually. Pipestone System: Manages over 461,000 sows across more than 70 sow farms for numerous family farmers. Triumph Foods: An alliance of independent pork producers that collectively owns around 435,000 sows and processes over 6 million hogs annually. Seaboard Foods: An integrated food company with around 365,000 sows, processing and marketing pork domestically and internationally.   Iowa Select Farms: The largest privately held pork production company in the U.S., marketing over 5.5 million hogs annually. It's worth noting that the pork production landscape can shift due to market conditions, company strategies, and other factors.

who owns smithfield foods

WH Group, a Chinese multinational meat and food processing company headquartered in Hong Kong, owns Smithfield Foods.

Here's a more detailed overview:

Acquisition: In 2013, WH Group, then known as Shuanghui Group, acquired Smithfield Foods for approximately $4.72 billion. This was the largest Chinese acquisition of an American company at the time.   Rationale for Acquisition: WH Group aimed to gain access to the U.S. market, acquire Smithfield's technology and expertise, and potentially export American pork to China, where there was a growing demand for foreign food products due to food safety concerns.   Post-Acquisition: Smithfield Foods continues to operate with its existing management team and American executives. WH Group's acquisition provided Smithfield with opportunities for expansion and access to new markets. WH Group's Structure: WH Group is a publicly traded company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. While it operates with a significant degree of autonomy, it is expected to adhere to the general goals outlined in the Chinese government's five-year plan.   Partial IPO: Despite being a subsidiary of WH Group, Smithfield Foods had an initial public offering (IPO) in January 2025 and its stock now trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. However, WH Group still retains a significant majority stake (around 93%) in Smithfield Foods. This listing provides Smithfield Foods with increased access to capital markets and enhances its market visibility.   In summary, while Smithfield Foods is an American company with its headquarters in the United States, its ultimate ownership lies with the Chinese conglomerate WH Group.

I thought the same. We have a company in Owensboro Ky called Field Meats. I always assumed they were locally owned. It only took about three minutes of research to find out they are ultimately owned by Mitsubishi. I would rather buy from the Japs than the Chinks, but it goes to show, you never really know.

I guess Hempler’s is owned by a Canadian company but still run by the Hempler family and they source their meat and ingredients from Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Just read a list of their suppliers on their website.

We started raising our own this year, we are picking up a 1/2 hog from the butcher this afternoon, we sold 4 1/2 and got our 1/2 for free and a small profit.

They are easy to raise, and only take 4-5 months to feed out. It's nice to know what they were fed & that they had 0 medications/anti-biotics (only ivermectin 2 times for worms & parasites).

We will be adding some cows this summer, we just need to put up some additional fencing and run water/power.

"They're" trying to "vaccinate" us through our food. Pigs were one of the ways they were looking at as a means for delivery.

I used to play ball on a field that used to be a hog farm. A decade later, and sliding into base kicked up an unbelievable stench. We eventually got desensitized, and it turned into a bit of an embarrassing home field advantage. This was far from the desert. I don't think pig waste breaks down very well.
