Protectionism and free trade are non-party based policy positions. RINO, non-RINO, democrat, republican- party affiliation doesn't really matter much.
What does matter however, is a particular politicians personal affiliations with their corporate backers and, their other income source's and, how those [income sources] corporations are affected by tariff's, or free trade agreements. That's the big motivating factor for most of those politicians on the tariff issue.
I'm pretty sure if we simply follow the money, the truth behind why Rand and his dad's horseshit position on tariffs would plainly reveal itself.
On a serious note. What has Congress managed on its own that’s actually been beneficial for the country. It seems like the Executive or Judicial Branch has ultimately twisted their arm most of the time to get things passed. If they didn’t say fuck it and did an end run around them.
Every major challenge Congress has had the opportunity to address on their own, without judges or the president becoming directly involved, they seemingly bungled or ultimately made far worse than it would have been otherwise. And I am counting from the countries inception.
The problem with the principled conservatives is that they refuse to understand that your clever adversaries can figure out how to use your unyielding commitment to your principles to actually destroy you.
For decades, our economic competitors have used tariffs to drain away our wealth and industry. But, dullards remain steadfastly against tariffs because they are, clutch your pearls here lads, taxes. Foreign countries LOVE our principled nitwits.
