Wow, they're not kidding, this place is humongous! I checked it out on Google Maps. Looks like they have 3 of those towers and solar panels as far as the eye can see!
From a posted review on Maps:
Ivanpah Solar Electric Power Plant has officially failed and will begin shutting down operations early 2026.
$1.6 BILLION in federal loans.
$535 MILLION grant.
$600 MILLION tax credit.
MASSIVE investor write-offs..
A SCAM paid for by US Taxpayers for NOTHING
Burning taxpayers $$$ w Solyndra wasn't enough, so USG doubles down on Ivanpah.
This is just a small example of how USG saddled taxpayers w $36T national debt.
Hydrogen is an extremely bad way to store electricity. The technology to transport it over any distance and use it is not yet available in any practical way. It leaks through all pipes, is explosive, burns with an extremely hot flame that is invisible so cannot be avoided. All metals used will become brittle and break over a few years which will cause leaks. Lots of gaseous pollution is generated during its production.
Just use the natural gas for energy instead of such a wasteful and impractical excuse to milk government subsidies.
Why would any sane person want to "diversify and decarbonize our energy systems "?
Use nuclear energy to generate electricity is obvious, but needs a lot of capital expenditure to get going. Most of our civilisation is based on carbon based chemistry and energy.
In California, it is all a scam. Money sucking parasitic whiners for ridiculous projects that if ever even completed are like a preposterous joke. Too numerous to list!
One thing Newsom did: On a smaller scale but equally stupid, involved cooling water reservoirs. But to preface, you know that plastics give off VOC and black plastic is worst of all. Only fools drink water from sun-baked plastic containers. So, to keep the direct sun off of the surface of water in a reservoir, NEWSOM HAD MEGA TRUCK LOADS OF BLACK PLASTIC BALLS UNLOADED ON THE RESERVOIR.TO COVER EVERY INCH OF THE SURFACE
I just drove past this crazy looking place a few weeks ago. You have to see it to understand the size and scope of this bizarre mega magnifying glass array of stupidity. Just looking at it made me say to my wife and son, "There's no way that is working with any efficiency, and wouldn't it incinerate birds flying by?" Who TF comes up with this crap?!
A blight is right. It's hard to believe how massive that thing is, how bright, how hot.
Wish I could recover all that silver.
But it's not practical.
They waste money on ideas they know won't work instead of what's in the patient vault right now being suppressed. 😖🙄😵💫
They worked as intended. They grifted a lot of money.
I'm sure there were many steak dinners involved. Good for restaurants! Win! /s
Job creation!
Exactly
Fun fact for anyone interested. The facility served as the inspiration for Helios One in Fallout New Vegas.

Wow they get you coming and going—> $2 billion to build and it kills the birds. Now do the wind powered turbines….
That has a lot of the same problems, plus, now you have to store and transport hydrogen.
Just build a nuclear reactor and move on.

You are wrong on every count. Try to learn something about reality.
Doh!!
It's a $1.6 billion dollar Rube Goldberg device. That also happens to kill any bird that comes near it.
Mirrors that heat boilers to create steam to turn turbines to create electricity. Brilliant!
Hideous and evil monstrosity

And global warming suddenly plummets. Scientists flummoxed.
The Chinese ghost cities still have us beat for being a waste of time and resources.

So who's gonna prosecute the authors of THAT scam?
