Either they were taken with good reason, in which case, they shouldn't be returned, or they were taken for bad reasons, in which case, why the hell are we rooting for Russia?
They were taken by the Russians probably out of brothels and trafficking hubs. Russia is returning them to THEIR real families. At least that is the way I interpret it.
Most trafficked children in the world are sold into trafficking by those very same families. Simply reuniting them is not always the correct solution. Also, if Russia could have done this the whole time, why wait till now? This war has been dragging on for over three years at this point.

There have been videos from Russian soldiers and Koreans fighting for Russia that have shown young Russian soldiers pulling kids out of family homes.
That's just anti-Russian propaganda. Those soldiers were saving those children from trafficking, or maybe just making sure they were OK. Something like that.

That whole part of the country is the battlefield though. We don't know they weren't kids of dead parents from a bombing or something. In that case you just give them back once they're safe, not relocate them to another country. Not everyone can just pick up and move out of the warzone
You can give them back to the surviving parent, or barring that there are grandparents, aunts/uncles...those are closer to being family than someone they've never met in another country, and one Trump has been quick to point out that is in a financial crisis itself. But you bring up a better point, they probably had no idea whether their parents were alive and looking for them in the first place.
If that's true, then why are they returning children now? If Ukraine isn't safe, shouldn't they be kept then?
My take is that some children found themselves in a war zone. What should be done? Should you carry on the fighting all around them or should you remove them to a place of safety?
One person's "removal to a place of safety" is another's "kidnapping".
The problem then is how do you return them to their parents? Presumably they were moved as well? How do you verify that adults claiming children are, in fact, entitled to claim those children?
Take 2: As Ukraine was a child-trafficking hub, my guess is that all their trafficked children would be blamed on Russia if it ever hit the news.
Then why are they returning them if there is a high risk of trafficking?
That's why you need to be sure that they are being returned to the right people.
How do we know though? If their family "lost" them in the first place, that tells me that maybe this isn't the best situation for them. None of this makes sense.
Suppose you send your children to school some miles away and the enemy army unexpectedly manages to advance past the school. Then you have the parents living at home and the children hiding in the basement of the school where they will be found by the invading army.
There are many reasons for children not being with their parents all the time.
It might be that school or the summer camp might be on the opposite side of the river from home and then a bridge is blown up. Bridges can be struck from miles away so no-one would necessarily need to be near the front line.
Who is sending their children to school in a war zone? The front lines have not changed dramatically in years. Most of Russia's gains came right at the beginning of the war. Have they just been holding onto these children for years?
And if they were separated by a bridge being blown out... well, how did they end up in Russian captivity then? None of these reasons make sense. It's not like these children were found a few weeks ago and are now being returned.

No, if this year has taught us anything, it is that where you're born matters a lot. "Americans" in Brazil have very little in common with those of us in the US. Even for those born in the US, many aren't true Americans. We really should be looking back two or three generations at least, to make sure someone is fully assimilated, and deport anyone who doesn't have American values, which is like half the country.
