A lot of people are using VPNs to make it a bit more difficult to be monitored by 3rd parties/governments. I started using one recently, and I bet a lot of UK folks have started as well. Apparently their government is looking to ban VPNs. Many people also use them to get around geo-restrictions, so it's not all for nefarious purposes.
That said, a lot of scammers/liars use them as well. If you suddenly see a huge amount of negative replies and they are all using a VPN, then that would be useful to know. Either way, it's more transparent to be able to see where someone is posting from and whether they are using a VPN.

I use one for security reasons and to block location tracking. Although with Starlink, your location already shows up as where the nearest Starllink downlink location is (I assume).
On bare Starlink, I show up as being in Chicago. On my VPN, the closest site is in Virginia although I sometimes switch it up just for fun. I do find that if I pick another country, some sites won't render.
I'm also running a corporate VPN for my employer over the top of my home VPN. Kind of just wanting to see if they notice when I show up as being somewhere else. Nobody's ever complained, but I know the Security guys well and we also have a lot of foreign-based contractors, so it's probably not worth their time to investigate.
This is a problem for people like me in Australia. We are about to be forced to provide ID to have an onlike account to prove we are over 16, got to protect the children you know!
Many are planning to just use a VPN and hide from the censors so Elon doing this screws us .
PS the Govt is running ads, my 14 year old son saw it and told them to fuck off. He will never vote left, he is awake.
PPS the MSM supports it, the kids never watch TV or read papers they are online learning from other sources. The politicans can't spread their shit, the media can't get advertising revenue and are losing that entire market.

From a Quality of Life perspective yeah it’s a bit of a positive development. You can map out influence networks. See if certain messages are being amplified by foreign accounts pretending to be not foreign to sow discord domestically as an example.
Allows for the beginnings of cognitive defense against foreign influence.
