The other reason is because normally a presidential candidate needs donor money to run. Many of the candidates promise favors and whatever cause the donor wants championed. Trump was rich enough to fund his own campaign.
No one knows the heart, and everyone has failings. Having said that, while it may not seem like the norm now, it used to be a fairly easy thing to have a clean business record, and no outward appearance of impropriety. In many cases there really weren't issues.
