They want your current devices to become obsolete so that they can, over time, inundate you with bullshit you didn't want. With each new "update" comes more spyware, more integration, less control for you, more for them. They know you would never go for a complete transparent agenda of what they want you to use. so they force it on you bit by bit and hope you don't notice or care.
Open systems become locked down cages that you have to be a tech genius to unlock.
This is by design, to keep you routed into whatever the fuck they want you in, and out of what they want you away from.
The Windows right-click menu gave us too much power, obviously. So Microsoft had to turn those bullets into nerf darts.
The pattern is everywhere, the cringe is high.
I recently connected an older laptop to the internet, briefly. It lagged like a fucking bitch, and it wasn't laggy before connecting. It is now unstable as can be, even disconnected.
Microsoft nuked my shit at first chance they got. And YES I had automatic updates disabled and a host of other crap. I might as well have been in the passanger seat with one of those kiddy steering wheels this whole time.
Forget archive offline, STAY OFFLINE, at least on one dedicated device that you use for specific, unmonitored activities.
This is the pinnacle of bullshit. Taxpayer-funded startup Big Tech "companies" sending kill-switches into our outdated, NON-SKYNET COMPATABLE devices.
UPGRADE YOUR PC TODAY! GET UNLIMITED INTEGRATED AI SPYWARE FOR $99 A MONTH PLEB, OH YOU HAVE TO BE ONLINE 24/7 WITH ID CHECK TO USE IT BTW AND YOUR OLDER DEVICES THAT DONT HAVE THE ABILITY TO RUN OUR SPYWARE WILL DIE AS SOON AS YOU CONNECT TO THE TAXPAYER FUNDED INTERNET.
OH, YOU LIKE SCROLLING YOUTUBE VIDEOS THE SIZE OF PROFILE PICS WITH LONG TITLES AND VIEW COUNTS NEXT TO THEM BEFORE YOU CLICK THEM, SO YOU CAN EASILY SCAN YOUR FEED AND DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO CLICK? NAHBRO, WHAT YOU NEED IS GIGANTIC SCREEN-SIZED THUMBNAILS SO THAT YOU ARE FORCED TO WEAR YOUR THUMB OUT OR ELSE JUST CLICK THE FIRST THINGS WE SHOW YOU. TOO MUCH POWER IN SMALL THUMBNAILS.
everything tech related is turning to totally avoidable dogshit right before our eyes. You'd think it was on purpose if you weren't retarded?
(nsfw flair in case Tim Walz lurks the board)
Truth is simpler, so I'm told. ;-)
Lots of the core stuff can't be fixed. It's old code written in old languages that no one can even read anymore. There are dependencies on top of dependencies. They just keep stacking more shit and put out fires as they come up. Bloated beyond measure. It's pretty sad that I can run Linux on a 15+ year old PC and it's faster than the newest shit you can buy with Windows. With a new solid state HDD my laptop loads in seconds. People are shocked. From off to login window in 15 seconds. 10 year old laptop, 4GB RAM, new SSD HDD.
Linux distros are open source and very current. They are also always being streamlined, as opposed to bloated. They run on passion. Try putting Linux on an old laptop or PC that you thought was dead and get ready to have your mind blown.
I have one PC left running Windows XP, SP3, for my flight sim. It is totally airgapped beacuse if it wasn't, as you said....
If you want a stable, secure, and efficient OS (and other software) that the people coding actually give a fuck about you need Linux. Period. Over 97% of the worlds supercomputers run Linux for a reason.
Folks at GAW need to be on Linux. If anyone needs any help, I'll do my best.
I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!!
Fren I need the help. I'm tired.
Can I run UE5, FL Studio, DaVinci Resolve and a bunch of plugins for each on it?!
Is there a wrapper?
I can swap DaVinci but I need the other two to work, and I need a plugin wrapper.
Yeah, that doesn't let Microsoft off the hook for injecting whatever the hell they injected into my laptop as soon as I connected it.
I did a quick search and it looks like UE5 and FL Studio can be run on Linux. UE5 can be run native but you'll have to find a distro that supports it. Alternatively you can compile it yourself but it takes 4-5hrs. I believe Arch Linux and distros based on it like CachyOS, EndeavorOS, Manjaro etc. will support it. For FL Studio, there are guides on Youtube to get it working. I saw a comment saying DaVinci Resolve was easy to get running on an Arch based distro as well (just had to install a package).
If your PC is powerful enough, maybe test install some distros on a virtual machine to play around and see what you can get working. Virtualbox is good and it's free to use. Also window's built-in VM solution would probably work fine.. HyperX or something? Been a decade for me. lol This way you can see what you like while keeping a working PC. You can even check if your chosen distro will work ok on your hardware by setting up a USB drive installer and booting off of that. You will get a full desktop with browser to test that your internet connection works etc.
Another option would be to install Virtualbox on Linux and then create a Windows 10 VM. Then you could just install your windows apps in there. Not sure if latency would be an issue for FL Studio though.
I've seen hoards of angry Windows users showing up in popular Linux channels lately asking what distro to install. Microsoft really screwed the pooch with Windows.
Virtual machines are slow, especially on older hardware. Pro audio on virtual boxes is a nightmare. If you need windows I'd go with a dual boot setup, even then, Windows is gett9ng worse by the hour.
I'd bite the bullet and switch to linux software wherever possible, it's better anyway. And free. Free as in freedom, and as in no bills.
Linux virtual machine is near native performance, using tiny 10 or 11 I do not notice any lag if the machine has 8 to 16 GB ram assigned.
The better MS Office alternative is called Libre Office. Open Office is older, but still okay. I misspoke. Thanks to u/Podger/ for correcting my error!
Terrifyingly, they were trying to help.
Listen brother, audio is my thing. Pro level. Ubuntu has a special distro for audio called Ubuntu Studio. It has a special kernel dedicated to getting the most out of your hardware and creating a super stable multi-track recording environment.
You'll have to learn a new software package, but it is very intuitive. Very similar to what you are used to. There will be a learning curve, but there is lots of help available online. It is worth it, I promise! Look into "Ardour". I LOVE it. FAR more powerful than any shit on Windows. All the plugins are FREE (like everything else on Linux) )and AMAZING! I use "Audacity" for little audio jobs, it's simpler.
To give you an example of the difference look into "
Open Office" "Libre Office". It is the Linux version of MS Office. Go download it now (there are free windows versions) and see the difference. It looks almost exactly the same, just more powerful. For example if you want to make a PDF instead of saving as a DOC file and fucking around converting it you just click "File, Export to PDF, DONE!" You can even use DOC files if you want. Open Office uses ODT files by default. If you love audio do yourself a favor and PLEASE LOOK INTO ARDOUR!
I do photoshop stuff too, the software is called "GIMP". I could never go back to Adobe bull shit. Check it out, free windows versions online. Great videos everywhere.
As far as UE5 goes, not in my wheelhouse sorry fren.
Great advice fren. However, instead of Open Office, I would consider Libre Office. Open Office is rarely updated and far behind Libre Office in development. Here's a nice comparison: https://openalternative.co/blog/libreoffice-vs-openoffice
An alternative to Gimp which is easier to use (though probably not quite as powerful) is Krita. There is a lot of great software available on Linux, that's for sure.
That's what I meant. KEK. I'll check out Krita, thanks!
Are you familiar with Ardour?
I have definitely heard of Ardour and I think I even installed it once to play around with it. I've never used a DAW though, so it's all beyond me. Maybe one day I'll learn if I can find some decent lessons online.
There is a learning curve because it is so powerful. It is beautiful once you get the hang of it. The plugins are unreal.
I like that Linux treats you like an adult. It doesn't treat you like a child and just do updates when it wants, it asks. If you tell it to fuck off, it fucks off.
Did a quick dig on UE5 for you fren....

Thank you for all the help frens. <3
I guess I'll get this journey started.
I might reach back out to you and or u/Podger if I get stuck haha
Welcome to team Linux! I'd recommend starting with a dual boot setup. BACKUP YOUR SHIT FIRST!
Reach out anytime. Good luck fren!

What distro have you chosen?
Ubuntu has a phone-ish type look/vibe. More common, easier.
Mint is more "windowsy".
I like Mint.
I havent even gotten to that part yet so I have no clue, been busy researching whether the $1,000+ worth of VST's and other 3rd party plugins I have amassed will work with Linux. Something about Wine... I'm starting to want a bottle. Or two 🫨
The main thing I need my computer for is video editing and audio production. I need a quick workflow so I'm not bogged down by technicals. I also want to use most of my plugins as I mentioned.
UE5 is just a beast I've been wanting to get into, but if I can get a good audio/video workflow out of a Linux setup I'll be happy, UE5 or no UE5
Happy to help fren!

If a wrapper does not exist or is difficult to find, get, and configure, I have found there most likely is 1 or 10 free programs native that will do what you really need.
There is a learning curve. The worst is getting your data moved and learning new software.
It's like learning music theory after getting good at guitar, like I did. A wise man once said...
"If you take the time to learn theory and regret it, you'll be the first."
Awesome! You are gonna love it!

I would add mx Linux is quite good
I am migrating all of my machines to Linux, (about 85% so far) even my flight sims since proton is getting better quite often. One gotcha I have seen is systemD is much like windows kernel. So even choosing a distro has multiple debates to make decisions about. Linux is better by leaps and bounds though.
I use MS FS2004. Not great graphics but the aircraft handle great.
Fair point, but nothing is totally secure. It's the way of the world. It's still light years ahead of windows.
Agreed it is better than ntKernel. But it is going the same direction taking over more and more ownership to PID 1 which really should only be starting other services. Also msfs 2004 is still a good sim.
Yeah I love that I can download a million planes. I have a museum full of aircraft. I have time on so many types it's crazy.
If you can make a washing machine fly, I'll land it. Kek.
Lol. I have a Win7 64 bit machine SP2 that not only holds its own, but on some applications can outperform my Win11 2024 company laptop. An iPhone 6, on its third battery and second screen, which cant use any of the new 'apps' but its a phone and text device first and foremost. I also have a ubuntu machine which i am too lazy to ise often. Should i mention the winXp laptop which 'talks' to my cars 🤣
Thanks for posting this, because you are expressing exactly the state of being since 20 years.
This is neither new nor revelatory in and of itself about the technical part, but about what was chosen to be done or refrained from being done.
steps.
why? To comprehend what you are doing, instead of blind trusting those who tell you to click a button.
In essence: The Linux path is the anti-dote to stupefication and slow brain gangrene / death.
As to your point: I can take my 20 year old laptop, drop puppy on there, run it from mem on 16mb and be online: as long as protocol: wireless a/b/c/ is still in operation. But, with the ETH0: it still works. It just has small throughput. Meaning, modern sites way be overwhelming the throughput, leading to laggy sites.
Better to use txt browser, then .....
Yes.
I took the idea that the PC industry was going to go south to heart a couple years back...I thought then the idea they would pursue is degrading software performance in the hope the public would replace older PC gear to fix issues with with newer AI hardware.
I speculate that hardware problems were planned for it as well...I think it is no coincidence that Intel's 14900k chips come up lame at the same time as Intel's Ultra platforms with AI NPU's are ready to go.
Software is one thing but having a AI NPU that can be addressed by an external system is not wise in long run I believe.
So older gear is best nothing beyond z790 chipsets should be used going forward for a Intel based PC. The same for AMD machines as well I am sorry I can't recall the older chipset ID but the current chipset is comprised.
AI is not of value to most users and owning a machine that will be used by others is waste of resources.
Yup. You hit the nail on the head. Windows 11 has all kinds of fun stuff onboard and it will only work if you also have a device with the spy chip in it. Already having problems with my 4 year old system ever since they cut 10 off. But hey, I can live with it for now.
My wife has to use it on her company laptop and a VM on her own laptop. She had to use a field device and needed to download the data, of course the drivers are only written for windows.
She has a W11 vm, every time I go near it, the time lost looking for the start menu, console, turning off those annoying widgets, the crappy file explorer.
Windows today is the product of easily distracted low iq minds. It’s beyond un functional.
It triggers Tourette’s syndrome in me every time I have to use it.
I miss my W7. The only reason they want to push everyone into W11 is because it's crappy and all the spyware on it along with the hardware. So they have force everyone to use it. I agree. Every Windows product is worse than the one before. Although, I do like 10 better than 8 that was a total dog.
So Windows is like the govt. Bloated and corrupt beyond usefulness. Its probably designed to be hacked, so they can continue to update and patch.
Add in a pinch of indian Saar coding and viola, modern Windows.
Low iq h1b1 bluffers are fascinated, even wholly reliant on AI, it does something they are incapable of, it outsourced thinking.
I agree - it is the insertion of tracking and an end goal that is not aligned with a consumer’s needs. Also, it is essentially ‘forced’. Controlled bloodletting (money side of it all) with some much more nefarious shit built in, likely of the depths of which we have no idea with regard to surveillance / control etc. It is a long game the lizards play :-).
I've been running Linux since 1992. I have one Windows 11 pc at home - it is a tiny NUC clone that I use for the very few things I can't do in Linux. My last remote job used the Windows remote Azure cloud thing for me to connect in (instead of a standard VPN) so the tiny pc simply connected me and displayed to my monitors.
Everything else I have runs some form of Linux - my NAS, my big PC, my smarthome stuff, my laptops, and all of my VMs. I supplement with about 2 dozen docker containers for stuff like Plex, Paperless-ngx, and a bunch of other things.
I do recommend something like NoMachine though. It has windows and linux clients, so I can have my "home" running on my main PC inside of NoMachine, move to my Windows PC and use NoMachine to pop my display over to my desk, and then move to my laptop and do the same. Wherever I sit (even traveling by using my own vpn) I can pull my main display over to me and continue working.
I can't comment on how well gaming works - I don't game. I do know there are ways to make that happen though, via steam, VMs, or by using Codeweavers Crossover. I haven't used Crossover in 3 or 4 years now - haven't needed it - but it worked well to run a fair amount of Windows programs inside of Linux. YMMV.
If you have an old laptop or PC, or you have a pc you can dual-boot, try it out. Pick a distribution and go. It has been my "daily driver" since '93 or '94.
Gaming has gotten soo much better these days with proton from steam. If you want the more hand holding option steamOS is almost out generally but any Linux distro 'can' do gaming quite well. I have gotten the last few game I currently play running in Linux and they run quite well.
You're speaking over my head fren but I'm glad to have frens like you because I guarantee I'll need help on this journey kek.
I wish GAW had groups I'd make a "Helping With Linux" group 🤣
Anytime. Anything I can do to help get people off of Windows makes me happy.
Windows is evil. They have made it so difficult to get by them to install anything else it is ridiculous. Took my friend and I almost a week to figure it out, but finally got Slackware installed, and what a difference. I got stuck having to use Windows for about 6 months and it was awful. Without anti-virus too. I will never do that again. Linux is the way to go. Steep learning curve, but it is worth it.
Thanks so much for the info and comments.
